Is this work? Sure, but I'm cheating, for nothing brings me more joy than sharing the beauty and secrets of my country with visitors. Hi! Xoán here (that's pronounced like 'Séan' but with a little twist). I'm a geographer with a solid academic background and licensed official guide. I'm fluent in several languages, from my native Galician to English, with a bit of an Irish (Corkonian!) accent. So I'm crazy about culture, geography, nature, history and stories. The city of Vigo and its port welcomes you to a day of discovery, from the amazing Cies islands to the nearby Castinheiras lagoon and the globally acclaimed city of Pontevedra. In just one visit you will see (time allowing!) ancient dolmens, nature, the immense culture and heritage of the area, and you'll be able to enjoy the delights of Galician cuisine in Pontevedra itself, the quaint capital of the "Rias Baixas" region. You'll have to tell me when to stop talking about Celts and ancient history though, for this area is full of remains to be seen and stories to be told and the topic is a passion of mine! Join me for all that plus a good stroll around the Pontevedra cobblestone streets of a medieval city projecting itself into the 21st century. I'll share with you many of the places and experiences that shaped me growing up, as this is totally my "home turf". NB. Xoan was very knowledgeable and communicated a lot about not just the area of the tour but also regional and Spanish history. He successfully made an effort to adjust the tour for my wife's use of a wheelchair. We had an excellent time.
Xoan was wonderful....sure learned a lot of history in the short time we had. Pickup at port was extremely easy. Who knew that we were able to stand on the exact spot where Christopher Columbus picked out the Santa Maria (even though that wasn't the original name) and learning about every town center has a purpose to the area....Also the highlight for my husband was walking through a very busy local market and having a fantastic lunch in Pontevedra. Thank you so much for a great tour and if anyone I know will be in the area we will definitely recommend Xoan....
We toured Vigo and Pontevedra with Xoan P and had a great day! Xoan is very knowledgeable but does not overwhelm you with too many historical facts. He really wants you to know the city and the culture, and when the tour ended we felt he accomplished his mission! He is a great conversationalist and kept us entertained throughout the tour. If we get back to the area we would definitely book with him again.
What a great day we had in Pontevedra with Xoan! His knowledge of the historical areas was fascinating and he is extremely personable. He took us to a local restaurant for a delicious lunch Spanish omelette and turkey and potatoes. We highly recommend spending time in Pontevedra with Xoan as your guide.
Walking the Centro Historico de Pontevedra with Xoan was so easy and peaceful. Xoan's love of this region was evident as he offered historical and contemporary aspects of his homeland. A special treat was when Xoan showed me the botanical gardens of Lourizan which were absolutely stunning. Overall a beautiful and fascinating experience with Xoan, a lovely gentleman indeed!
Xoan was fantastic. He took us through Vigo and Pontevedra and we had a fabulous time. Great mix of history and culture.
- From Vigo we'll drive straight to the city of Pontevedra for a walking tour of this award winning city. We'll travel centuries back in time through the narrow streets and a myriad of picturesque squares. - We'll stroll north to the old port and the stone bridge which gives name to the city and the banks of the majestic Lérez river, whose valley played a central role in European history. - We'll visit the ruins of the medieval walls and some other remarkable monuments, such as the St. Maria basilica. Actually, we'll be stopping at the exact spot where Columbus' ship was actually built and pass by the house of the last ever pirate (aaarrr!). - In between all that we'll have have authentic Galician food in a wonderful restaurant where locals love to go, right in the middle of the old town. - On the way back we'll visit Castinheiras lagoon and a 6000 year old dolmen.
