Join me in an exploration of the globally acclaimed city of Pontevedra! Famous for its rich heritage and seafaring tradition, but also for the many awards it has been collecting in recent years owing to its revolutionary pedestrian model, the quaint capital of the "Rias Baixas" region in Galicia is a must. Come see the radical urban transformation while strolling through its magnificent medieval centre (the second largest in Galicia) and the myriad of squares and cobblestone streets, a demonstration of how a city can be both modern and proud of its ancient past at the same time. Calling the city a "hidden gem" is not a cliché in this case, but you'll need a truly experienced guide to unveil its secrets for you and tell you how this city played a pivotal role in European history. So help me share with you my passion for my hometown, the many funny tales of the "boa vila" (the 'good town'), and how people did live and do live today in this little but proud Atlantic city. I'll make a local out of you!
- We will set out from Peregrina square, the heart of the city, and proceed to cross the threshold of the former medieval walls. - We'll travel centuries back in time through the old streets and squares, such as a Ferraria, Lenha, Verdura and so on. We'll make a quick stop in each square. - We'll stroll north to visit the market, and then proceed to the stone bridge which gives name to the city and the banks of the Lérez river, whose valley played a central role in European history. - We'll stop at where the dockyards used to be, the exact spot where Columbus' ship was actually built! - We'll go inside the St. Maria basilica, another highlight with plenty of amusing stories, and we'll also pass by the house of the last ever pirate (arrr!). - Then we'll continue to the old Town Hall, the 19th century boulevard, mansions and gardens, and we'll complete the tour circling along Oliva St. , a local shopping hotspot. Needless to say, this route can be adapted to suit any taste or specific interest.
