Košice is the second-largest city in Slovakia and represents the economic and cultural centre of eastern Slovakia. The first written mention of the city was in 1230 as "Villa Cassa"- The term villa meant and was linked with more important cities in those times. The period between the 13th-15 century brought prosperity and importance to the city which was highlighted by the date of 7th May 1369. Košice received the document of the coat of arms signed by the king as the first European town. Today it is celebrated as the "Day of Košice". Later on, the city was an important witness of several political changes that shaped history. From 4 anti-Habsburg uprisings in 1604-1645, Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 to Velvet revolution in 1989. If you would like to visit the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe or discover the birthplace of the engineer who constructed the Corinth Canal, do not wait any longer.
Our journey starts next to the Dominican church, the oldest preserved monument of the city. From there we move deeper to the historical city center. We explore and learn about: - St. Michael's Chapel - Discover stories and history of the St. Elisabeth Cathedral - Walk around the Plague Column - Find out the story behind the Urbans's Bell - Churches in the Old Town - Jakab's Palace - Visit the replique of Turkish house in exile of the leader of last anti-Habsburg uprising. . . . and many more!
