Xochimilco floating gardens and/or UNAM

Xochimilco, "land sown with flowers", 17 miles south from the center of the city. It's known because of its "Floating Gardens" made by the ancient inhabitants of the south basin of Mexico, who transformed lagoons, swamplands and marshes into areas of agricultural production with canals that help to transport products. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987. Lake Xochimilco is the only habitat for the critically endangered Axolotl salamander. The borough also has a number of nature reserves. On the other, there's the Island of the Dolls. The Central University City Campus of the UNAM is one of the maximum exhibitors of the modernism in Latin America and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The campus constitutes a unique example of 20th-century modernism integrating urbanism, architecture, engineering, landscape design and fine arts with references to local traditions, especially to Mexico's pre-Hispanic past. The ensemble embodies social and cultural values of universal significance.

- 10:30 Hotel pick up in Condesa, Roma, Chapultepec, Polanco or Coyoacan. Drive towards South (aprox. 45-50 min drive) to Cuemanco pier in Xochimilco - 11:30 two hour boat ride - 13:30 Return and hotel drop off or agreed point in the area. Option 2 (only on weekends) - 09:30 pick up - 10:30 Walking tour through the City Campus of the National University to see the murals that are a clear example of the plastic art integration of modern architecture, Mexican traditions and artwork with designs inspired in the Aztec and Spanish past and set by the flora of the volcanic rock natural scenery. - 12:30 return and back to hotel or drop off in Coyoacan or San Angel.
