Explore Pula your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Pula tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Pula for every interest, including:

History tours: Step inside the Pula Arena to see the subterranean galleries and stone seating, then follow your guide to the Temple of Augustus and the Arch of the Sergii to unpack Roman rituals in the Forum. You can also hike up to Kaštel to trace Venetian cannon lines and hear how Austro-Hungarian troops fortified the hillside.

Architecture tours: Compare precise Roman arches at the Arena and Arch of the Sergii with star-shaped Habsburg-era forts like Fort Bourguignon and Fort Verudela, now housing Aquarium Pula. Your guide can time these tours to catch the Lighting Giants at the Uljanik shipyard, a night-time transformation of industrial cranes.

Art and Culture tours: Taste Istrian olive oils and truffle spreads at Pula Market, then explore murals and studios inside the Rojc Community Centre with a local who knows the artists. If you like hands-on experiences, your guide can arrange a quick mosaic or ceramics workshop before an evening stroll to watch the Lighting Giants.

The Old Town is compact and easy to walk, and local buses link beaches and neighbourhoods like Verudela and Štinjan; if you want to cut travel time between distant sites, you can book chauffeured tours or ask your guide about private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Pula inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Pula

Use Pula as your base, then slip out to nearby cities and coastal nature spots on easy day trips, and keep things simple with private tours when you want a deeper look at one place.

- Rovinj: A 45-minute ride brings you to a tight old town that rises to St. Euphemia’s church, where the view arcs over islands and a busy harbour; spend time in stone lanes lined with small studios, eat fresh seafood by the water, and add a swim or a sunset cruise if you like photography, art, and slow coastal walks.

- Poreč: About an hour north, the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica shines with 6th-century mosaics, while the old Roman street grid makes it easy to wander between cafés and the seafront; this works well if you enjoy history paired with a relaxed promenade, and you can mix in a short coastal bike ride to round out the day.

- Brijuni National Park (from Fažana): Fifteen minutes from Pula, boats cross to Veli Brijun, where you find Roman villa ruins, quiet coves, pine shade, and small museums; rent bikes on the island for easy loops, look for deer in the meadows, and focus the day on nature and light history without long travel time.

- Motovun: Head 1 hour 15 minutes into Istria’s hills for a walled town above truffle-rich forests, tasting local olive oil and wines, walking the ramparts for big valley views, and learning how the region’s food scene ties to the land; this suits you if you like simple hikes, food stories, and scenic drives.

- Cape Kamenjak (Premantura): In about 30 minutes you reach a protected peninsula of limestone cliffs, clear inlets, and bike trails, good for swimming, snorkelling, and a laid-back picnic; it’s an easy nature break close to town, and a solid pick if your day trips lean toward active time and blue water.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Pula most travellers miss.
