Explore Jaco Carara National Park your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Jaco Carara National Park tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Jaco Carara National Park for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Begin early in Carara National Park on the Universal Access trail and Quebrada Bonita loop to hear mantled howlers, watch leafcutter ants at work, and scan for scarlet macaws and trogons in the canopy. Add a stop at the Tárcoles Bridge around low tide to safely observe massive American crocodiles below with a naturalist who knows the best viewing times.

Boat tours: Glide through the Tárcoles River and Guacalillo Estuary on a flat-bottom boat for close-up birding of kingfishers, egrets, and spoonbills, plus safe crocodile spotting from the water. Sunset boat tours can focus on photography, with your guide positioning the boat in side channels where macaws fly to roost.

Hiking tours: Choose a half-day hike on Carara’s shaded trails for wildlife tracking, or take a guided walk up to El Miro, the abandoned hillside viewpoint above Jacó with ocean panoramas and murals. For a tougher trek, your guide can lead you to Bijagual Waterfall in the hills near Tárcoles, timing breaks at natural pools on the ascent.

Getting around: Jacó itself is walkable, but Carara, the Tárcoles River, and trailheads are spread out with limited public transit; you can book chauffeured tours or ask your local guide for private transportation between sites.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Jaco Carara National Park inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Jaco Carara National Park

From Jaco you can branch out to nearby cities and wild places on easy day trips that swap beach time for forests, river wildlife, and coastal views.

Carara National Park: Walk shaded trails that host scarlet macaws, trogons, and poison dart frogs, and see giant crocodiles sunning below the Tárcoles bridge on the park edge. It works well if you love birds, nature photography, or a laid-back hike, and your tour can focus on birdwatching or a mix of short trails.

Tárcoles River: Glide through mangroves on a small boat to spot massive crocs, herons, and roseate spoonbills while learning how the river shapes local life. Great for families and wildlife fans, this pairs with a simple seafood stop in the village for a low-key coastal day.

Manuel Antonio National Park: Trade Jaco’s surf for calm coves, monkeys in the almond trees, and sloths hidden in the canopy on one of Costa Rica’s most loved beaches. Ideal if you want wildlife and swimming in one place, plus easy trails that suit a relaxed pace.

Playa Hermosa: Watch skilled surfers ride steady breaks and walk the long, dark-sand beach that feels open and wild. If your interests lean to surf culture, sunset photography, or a quiet shoreline, this close-by run keeps the day simple without long drives.
