Explore Sal your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Sal tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Sal for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Wade into Shark Bay with a marine-savvy guide to see juvenile lemon sharks, then, in turtle season, join a night patrol to spot nesting loggerheads near Costa da Fragata. You can also float in the salty Pedra de Lume crater and watch the Blue Eye light up at Buracona.

Food and Drink tours: Meet fishers on Santa Maria pier and try grilled catch-of-the-day and pastel com diabo dentro at a beach barraca on a private tour. Stop at Espargos’ municipal market for fruit and spices, then sample grogue and sweet ponche at a local bar.

Adventure tours: Learn to kitesurf at Kite Beach with a patient instructor, or ride a quad across the Terra Boa flats to Serra Negra’s lookout on a private tour. Snorkel the calm Santa Maria reef or drive dune buggies to the Buracona lava pools for a swim.

Santa Maria is easy to walk, but sights around the island are spread out and public transport is limited and irregular; you can book a chauffeured tour or ask your local guide to include private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Sal inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Sal

You came for the beach time in Sal, but nearby salt craters, rocky coves, and small towns make easy day trips and tours that add a different side of the island to your days.

Pedra de Lume Salt Crater: Float in super salty water inside an old volcanic crater, then wander the wooden walkways and see the remains of the historic salt works, which suits you if you like simple geology, quick swims, and photo stops without a long drive.

Buracona and the Blue Eye: Watch the sun light up the “Blue Eye” in a lava pool, explore short coastal trails, and check out blowholes and rugged rock formations, a good fit if you’re into easy walks, dramatic coastlines, and timing a visit for the midday glow.

Shark Bay at Baía da Parda: Wade in shallow water to see harmless lemon sharks cruise past your legs at low tide, learn how they use the bay, and enjoy a sandy shoreline with wide views, which works well for wildlife fans, curious kids, and anyone who likes a bit of thrill without a big effort.

Palmeira and the island’s northwest coast: Stroll a working harbour and painted lanes, watch fishermen land the day’s catch, then continue to quiet coves and lookouts, so you get local life, simple seafood, and coastal scenery in one loop if culture and easy exploring are your thing.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Sal most travellers miss.
