Explore Praia your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Praia tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Praia for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Head into Serra Malagueta Natural Park for ridge walks with Atlantic views and a chance to see Iago sparrows and ospreys, then continue to Pedra Badejo Lagoon to watch herons and egrets at the water’s edge. On coastal tours near Ribeira da Barca, your guide knows lookouts where dolphins are often spotted in season.

Layover tours: With airport pick‑up and drop‑off, explore the Plateau neighbourhood’s markets and murals, browse crafts at Mercado de Sucupira, and visit Farol de D. Maria Pia for harbour views before a quick stop at Quebra Canela beach. These layover tours can include a casual cachupa lunch and keep your luggage secured in the vehicle so you make your connection on time.

History tours: Walk the Plateau to see the Presidential Palace, Praça Alexandre Albuquerque and the Ethnographic Museum, then drive about 20 minutes to UNESCO‑listed Cidade Velha to visit the Pelourinho, Rua Banana and Fort Real de São Filipe. Your guide brings the early Atlantic trade era to life at former sugar mill sites and along the old waterfront.

Getting around: The Plateau is compact and walkable, but Praia is hilly and hot, and sights like Serra Malagueta or Cidade Velha are spread out; shared “aluguer” minibuses run, though they’re informal and not ideal on a tight schedule. For comfort and timing, you can book chauffeured tours or ask your local guide about private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Praia inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Praia

From Praia, it’s easy to branch out to nearby towns, beaches, and highlands for simple day trips and tours that fit your interests, and your guide can shape the day around history, hiking, markets, or the coast.

Cidade Velha: Explore the old capital in about 25 minutes, see Rua Banana, the pelourinho in the main square, and Fortaleza Real de São Filipe above town, which works well if you like early Atlantic history, architecture, and short walks through stone lanes, and your tour can dig into stories of trade, resilience, and local food traditions.

Serra Malagueta Natural Park: In roughly 90 minutes you reach cool ridgelines and valley views, with trails that range from easy walks to longer hikes, so this suits you if you want birding, endemic plants, and big island panoramas, and your guide can help you pick a route that matches your pace and daylight.

Tarrafal: About a two-hour drive brings you to a calm bay with clear water, simple seafood spots, and a laid-back town feel, which is ideal if you want beach time, snorkelling near the rocks, and coastal photos, and your tour can include scenic stops through mountain villages on the way north.

Assomada Market: Around an hour from Praia, this busy market rewards you with fresh produce, spices, and craft stalls, which is great if you enjoy local flavour, people watching, and small purchases, and your guide can time the visit for market days and help you connect with vendors in a friendly way.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Praia most travellers miss.
