Could you imagine that you will be walking on reclaimed land in Bridgetown, Barbados? The Bridgetown Port and Pelican Island were once separate by water. . Its heritage is now preserved in the Pelican Craft Center just outside the port. It has a trove of small shops featuring galleries with local art, crafts, pottery, clothing, and yummy delicacies. Pelican Island was discovered when Barbados was settled in 1627 and got the name from the Brown Pelican on the Island. I was born and raised in Barbados and heard from my mother about the little Island next to Barbados. I was riveted by what she had to tell me, because she actually used to go on the Island as a girl guide, on the weekend, learning to cook on a camp fire never knowing that one day I and get to tell my mum story to visitors to the island about pelican Island, from island to Port. Let me share it with you!! Discover who had the vision and the insights to change the island to a Port, and what would become a thriving port!!
