I grew up in Kent, and am very proud of my home county, known as the Garden of England, due to its agriculture and farming, especially fruit. I am a Green Badge Guide for the City of Canterbury and a Blue Badge Guide for South East England (Kent, Sussex and Surrey). This qualification is accredited by the Institute of Tourist Guiding, of which I am a member, and is the highest professional tourist guiding qualification in the UK. I live in a village between Canterbury and Faversham, and am able to travel across the region and into London as required. I do many tours in Kent, but can cover Sussex and Surrey if needed. I regularly guide excursions from cruise ships at Dover, and can arrange private transport as needed. There is so much to explore in this area - from countryside to coast, historic cities, bustling market towns and quaint villages. The proximity of South East England to mainland Europe means it has played a key role in the country's history, having been the point of arrival for centuries. I originally trained as a nurse in London, and lived and worked there for several years. I spent 35 years working in the NHS and charity sector. I have always been interested in history, literature and travelling, and combining these passions to share this beautiful part of the country is now my ideal job, since 2018. I look forward to welcoming you!

Overview of your Tunbridge Wells tour

Rochester has an exceptionally rich and long history, which can be easily explored in a half day tour. The magnificent Cathedral was founded in 604 AD, the second oldest in England. It is adjacent to Rochester Castle, an impressive 11th century Norman fortress, with stunning views from the top of one of the tallest keeps over the River Medway which it was built to defend. Visit the places cherished by the writer Charles Dickens, who lived in the area as a child and returned to as a successful author. You can walk in his footsteps along the cobbled streets, and see the places that inspired his writing. The High Street has many charming independent shops, cafes and traditional tea rooms.

Your Tunbridge Wells tour itinerary

A walk around the city takes us in the footsteps of celebrated novelist Charles Dickens. He lived locally as a child and chose to return as an adult. He was inspired by many of the buildings that can still be seen, such as Restoration House, inspiration for Miss Havisham's home, and the Six Poor Travellers House. You can also see the Swiss Chalet used by Dickens as a study. Rochester Cathedral was founded by Justus in 604, and is the second oldest in England. Visit inside to see the impressive Norman architecture and reflect on centuries of Christian prayer. The 11th-century Norman Castle was the site of a famous siege in 1215. The Castle has been the scene of destruction and reconstruction over many centuries. The Guildhall Museum, a magnificent 17th-century building contains several local history displays, including Charles Dickens' life, as well as a full-size reconstruction of an 18th-century Medway prison ship. The tour also includes time for a coffee stop at a cafe.
