I am a professional Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria with an accreditation in eco-tourism, and a wealth of experience in tour planning - itineraries, route planning, help with accommodation and transport. Learning should be fun and that is what I want you to experience during our guided tour. By gradually building up your understanding of the history, heritage and breathtaking landscapes of Hadrian's Wall or the Lake District (both World Heritage Sites), you will feel enriched with positive memories that you can share with others. You are not joining a group or having a set tour that is repeated on a daily or weekly basis. This is your tour, and by listening to and understanding your requirements, I can develop the optimum tour that works for you. I am a fully accredited Blue Badge Tourist Guide since 2011, and registered with the Institute of Tourist Guides and Cumbria Tourist Guides. I have an honours degree in Environmental Studies, with a particular interest in historic landscapes, heritage, geology and wildlife. In 2009, I was commissioned by Cumbria Tourism to undertake a 'Sense of Place' project for the whole of Cumbria, which involved identifying the attributes that make different localities distinctive and unique. This bank of research now underpins the GoLakes website and is used for various promotional purposes. As well as guiding, I design interpretation panels on local and natural history, and I am the author of various leaflets and booklets including 'Romans in Cumbria' and 'Solway's Built Heritage'. I am not a driver guide, but I can accompany you in your vehicle or arrange for a separate car and driver. Please note that having a separate driver is perfect for undertaking linear walks - and particularly useful for tours along Hadrian's Wall.

There is much more to the story of Beatrix Potter than Peter Rabbit. On this fascinating tour, we will follow in her footsteps to understand the story behind this remarkable woman, starting with her early years as a gifted artist to a pivotal moment at Wray Castle that changed the course of her life. Her later success as a children's illustrator enabled her to purchase land and property that were ultimately gifted to us all through the National Trust. On this tour, we will attempt to understand Beatrix through the eyes of an impressionable 16-year-old to a mature woman who overcame the challenges of growing up as a female in Victorian Britain and who turned tragic events into positive outcomes. Ultimately, her conservationist vision left a lasting legacy to the Lake District National Park that we all benefit from to this day. Although this tour is best done by electric bicycle, it can be adapted to a car tour.

Anna was spectacular. Her knowledge of Cumbria and all things Beatrix Potter made this an unforgettable experience. She made sure that we saw all the places that influenced and nurtured Beatrix Potter here in Cumbria. Anna even slipped in a quick pop into Hawkshead Grammar School so that we could see it on the last day of the season. Anna arranged a beautiful tea at Sawling House and then helped us get settled in our Airbnb before bidding us adieau !

I didn’t realize the tremendous impact Beatrix Potter had on the Lake District or on the importance of women in English society. Our guide, Anna, was a wealth of knowledge. And she took us to very interesting and unique places. This is a tour anyone visiting the Lake District would find fascinating.

Anna arranged an exceptional private tour of what is "Beatrix Potter" country for me. Anna's knowledge and detail of Beatrix Potter's Life was 'to leave no stone unturned'. It was remarkable. I had an unforgettable day of beauty, history and being with a affable guide. Thank you so much Anna.
Our first stop is the Armitt Museum for an introduction to Beatrix Potter (BP) as an artist, scientist and landowner, along with a private viewing of BP's illustrations of fungi (subject to opening times). Bikes are collected from Ferry Landing car park at Bowness. We cross over Windermere by ferry and cycle along the largely traffic-free west side of the lake to Wray Castle. Here you'll learn about a chance meeting with the local vicar, who was a huge influence on BP and became a lifelong friend and mentor. Note: Wray Castle is closed throughout 2026, but the grounds are open. Next is Hawkshead for a tour around this attractive market town, followed by lunch at one of the many pubs or tearooms in this highly picturesque village. After lunch, we visit Beatrix's much-loved home at Hill Top, left entirely as she intended, and return on the chain ferry back to Bowness.
