We cannot recommend him highly enough. Alex is everything you could want in a guide — warm, attentive, extraordinarily knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the region he calls home. He didn't just take us to the obvious spots; he knew every winding lane, every hidden path, and every secret corner of Devon that most visitors never get to see. The result was a day that felt genuinely personal and special rather than touristy. The scenery alone was breathtaking — sweeping green vistas, the glittering ocean, the river, and wildlife that stopped us in our tracks — wild ponies and sheep wandering freely as if posing just for us. Alex seemed to know exactly where to be and when, and his timing was perfect throughout the day. Lunch at the Church House Inn in Rattery was an unexpected highlight — don't let the name fool you, it is an absolute delight and exactly the kind of hidden gem only a truly knowledgeable local guide would know to take you to. Beyond the sights, Alex simply took care of us. He had water ready, took photos for us without being asked, made comfort stops whenever needed, found the best shopping, and navigated the most gorgeous tree-canopied lanes in the most comfortable car. I won the title of Top UK Guide at the Wanderlust World Guide of the Year Awards at the end of 2018, and have won many other prestigious tour guiding awards, including Gold at the Southwest Tourism Awards in England. I have spent most of my working life in customer service industries, including the tourism industry, so you can expect me to take great care of you, ensuring that you have the best possible time. Devon has so much to offer, being one of the most sought after holiday destinations in the United Kingdom, and yet it is never difficult to get off the beaten track, especially if you are in my hands - local knowledge counts for a lot if you really want to get to see a place! I have many hobbies and interests which I feel can only enhance your time with me, including photography, nature, walking, history, travel, cooking and genealogy (I have an extensive and prestigious Scottish family history which I am happy to share with you). Overview of your Devon tour
Featuring two of Devon's most beautiful areas, this tour is perfect for anyone with limited time in the area, since it gives guests a great overview of two of Devon's most beautiful areas, Dartmoor and the South Devon coast, in just one day. We spend the morning on Dartmoor, experiencing the nature, Tors, Bronze Age history and myths and legends of this intriguing place, perhaps taking a short walk or two. We will then head to a favourite old Dartmoor inn for lunch, where you can taste the local ale and tasty home cooked food. In the afternoon we will drive to the South Devon coast. Here I will give my guests a snapshot of fascinating World War Two history, with a very strong link to the USA, and we can take a wander on to one of the beautiful beaches. We'll then enjoy driving along the coastal road to the picturesque and historically interesting town of Dartmouth, where we will have time to explore some of the attractive streets & shops of this old naval town.

Most delightful tour. Alex guided us through the lanes of Devon with skill, humor, and extensive knowledge. We were able to see locations associated with family history as well as enjoy the ambience of Dartmoor and Dartmouth. Special treat to have Sunday roast at a very old English pub. Alex also shared some of his family history--fascinating stories going back several generations. The perfect way to feel Devon!

Your Devon tour itinerary
I will collect you at 9am, after you've had breakfast. We'll take a beautiful drive across Dartmoor, allowing you to see various Tors and sites of historical interest, including a grave with a tale to tell and a bronze age settlement. After a short moorland walk or two, we'll have a relaxing lunch at a highly regarded country inn. After lunch, we'll head through typical lovely rolling Devon scenery down to the South Devon coast. Our first stop will be right on the coast, where I will tell you about some fascinating and surprising World War Two history, with a very strong US link. Then we will drive along the picturesque coastal road, enjoying the views, before we come into the historically important and quite beautiful town of Dartmouth. Here we can go for a wander through the narrow streets, enjoying the numerous art galleries, high quality shops, and interesting architecture. We can stop for a cup of tea and piece of cake, then we'll head back to your hotel for about 5.00pm to 5.30pm.

In the morning there is an optional 5 to 10 minute walk up a fairly undemanding slope to the Bronze Age settlement, followed by an optional steeper walk.
