Hello, and welcome to Devon. My name is Alex, and as an award winning tour guide I can organise wonderful days out for you in this most beautiful and intriguing area of England. I won the title of Top UK Guide at the Wanderlust World Guide of the Year Awards at the end of 2018, and have won many other prestigious tour guiding awards, including Gold at the Southwest Tourism Awards in England. I have lived in Devon all my life, and am very passionate about sharing what it has to offer. I have spent a vast amount of time getting to know the area in order to be able to show my guests the very best that it has to offer. From the landscapes and legends of Dartmoor to the Cathedral and Roman history of Exeter, from famous characters like Dame Agatha Christie and Sir Francis Drake to beautiful beaches and cream teas, from glorious gardens and evocative castles to steam trains and river boats, Devon can truly offer something for anyone, whatever their interests. I am happy to take you and your group on pre-planned tours as listed, or I can arrange tailor made tours according to your preferences. I have built excellent links with many attractions and businesses in the area with whom I can work to provide you with exclusive and fascinating experiences. As well as being your good natured and award winning guide, I will also be your driver, taking you out in my comfortable 7 seater Ford Galaxy. I can pick you up from wherever you wish locally, or arrange transport if you need collecting from further afield. I have spent most of my working life in customer service industries, including the tourism industry, so you can expect me to take great care of you, ensuring that you have the best possible time. I am now very keen to focus more on enjoying the work that I do, and I would like to share this enjoyment with you. Devon has so much to offer, being one of the most sought after holiday destinations in the United Kingdom, and yet it is never difficult to get off the beaten track, especially if you are in my hands - local knowledge counts for a lot if you really want to get to see a place! I have many hobbies and interests which I feel can only enhance your time with me, including photography, nature, walking, history, travel, cooking and genealogy (I have an extensive and prestigious Scottish family history which I am happy to share with you). If you want me to, I will act as your photographer for the day, and produce good quality images to remember your time in Devon by. So, whatever your interests, please come to me to discuss what I can arrange for you. I can also point you in the direction of the very best accommodation that this area has to offer, as well as taking you to the best restaurants and inns for your meals. I hope to meet you soon. Higher National Diploma in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management. I have public liability insurance, and all the other licences and insurances as required of me by my local authority.

This exciting tour introduces the intriguing story behind The Hound of the Baskervilles, including the people, places and legends that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write his first Sherlock novel in nearly 10 years, and arguably his most highly acclaimed. Many wonderful locations are included, from peaceful graveyards to a ruined church with black magic associations, and Bronze Age villages to evocative Moorland mires. The tour will leave you well educated about how this story came about, and it is delivered by a descendant of one of the people involved in the creation of the plot, making it completely unique. Hear about the evil Squire Cabell and his pack of hounds, the coach driver whose name is now etched into fictional folklore, and see the 200 year old prison that Seldon escaped from. Guests will come away stimulated, intrigued and wanting to read the famous book once again. The tour also covers many other aspects of local life, and there will be multiple excellent photo opportunities too!
I’ll collect you at 9am from your accommodation. The day starts gently in the tranquil village of Ipplepen, where you will be introduced to some of the key characters behind the story, where they lived, worshipped, and were eventually buried. Then on to the charming town of Ashburton to see more interesting places relevant to the tale. After this we head to the spooky Holy Trinity Church, where we find out about the evil Squire Richard Cabell III. We then drive through beautiful scenery and enter magnificent Dartmoor National Park. Lunch will be at a charming country inn, after which we'll head to various sites of Baskerville relevance. We'll visit Grimspound to see the iconic Bronze Age settlement, then on to Fox Tor Mire, the inspiration for the very bleak and inhospitable Grimpen Mire in the book. You also get to see the tin miners' cottages, and Dartmoor Prison too. If time allows, a cream tea ends the day, before returning to your accommodation between 5.00pm and 5.30pm.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
As your driver guide, I will take you around in my Ford Galaxy people carrier, which can comfortably take 6 adult passengers. It is a 2021 model in very good, clean condition. I have public liability insurance, and all the other licences and insurances as required of me by my local authority. During the day there are a few short walks, all on the level, apart from one ten minute walk up a fairly undemanding slope to the Bronze Age settlement.
