Hadrian's Wall

The tour starts in Carlisle - the Roman city of Luguvalium. From here, we head to Lanercost Priory to see Hadrian's Wall recycled into the church. Then to Banks Turret for an introduction to the Wall - who built it, why and how it operated. Travelling eastwards, we arrive at Birdoswald where you can either tour the fort or walk along a continuous section of Hadrian's Wall to Gilsland where the driver will pick up. Carvoran is next - for an award-winning film in 3D and an understanding of Roman armor and weaponry. If time permits, we will walk along the adjacent Walltown Crags - probably the finest (and highest) section of the original Wall that remains. At Cawfields we will see an impressive milecastle and a view over the whole of the military zone including the mysterious vallum. Finally, the tour ends on a high note at Steel Rigg for a spectacular view looking east over Hadrian's Wall.
