Hadrian's Wall

The tours starts in Carlisle with its two Roman forts - one on the Stanegate frontier; the second on Hadrian's Wall. From here, we travel via Naworth Castle and Lanercost Priory to Banks Turret where you will receive an overview of the Wall and all its structures - why it was built and how it operated. Birdoswald is next, where we can walk along a section of original Wall to Gilsland where the driver will pick us up. This one-mile section is packed with interesting features from Roman times. Next is either Carvoran Roman Army Museum or the magnificent Walltown Crags - probably the finest (and highest) section of the original Wall that remains. At Cawfields, you will see an impressive milecastle and a view over the whole of the military zone including the vallum. We then drive on the back roads to Steel Rigg for a spectacular view looking east over Hadrian's Wall. Depending on time, we can continue to either Housesteads or Vindolanda and end the day exploring an excavated Roman fort and vicus.
