Entry to Transylvania (day trip from Timisoara for first timers)

We will enter Transylvania the same way the Romans legions did more than 2000 years ago, through Tapae - also called the iron gates of Transylvania. I always feel the emotion of my guest as we go trough this places. Only a few kilometers away we will stop to visit Ulpia Traiana Sarmisegetusa, the ancient roman city, the first capital of the Roman province Dacia.

Further east towards Densus we will see probably the oldest church still standing on Romanian soil. As Then we will stop in Hunedoara to see the famous Corvin Castle, a masterpiece of 15th-century gothic architecture, listed among the most visited sites in Romania.

On the way back I'll take you to see the Deva citadel, the one that guarded for more than 500 years the entrance to Transylvania on the Mures Valley. This is probably my favorite ending for a day tour, as we will enjoy the fairytale view from the walls of the fortress towards sunset, where we will be heading, heroes for another day!

25 km east of Arad, the Arad vineyard boosts the most dynamic and colourful wine area in western Romania! A lot of small and medium-sized producers from all over Europe have settled here and are fighting for the craftsmanship of the most demanding wines that any refined lover will be delighted with.

Western Romania, like all border areas, has a complicated history, but there is an extraordinary combination of vineyard culture as well. I spent my whole life so far around these places and still find lots of interesting facts in it, stories that I can't wait to tell you. I've learned about the wines tasting them over and over and mostly talking with those pasionate winemakers that you will meet as well.

A daylong tour through the vineyard includes, in addition to tastings in the wine cellars in the area, a visit to the depot of the first electric train in Eastern Europe and also through the places where the armies of Austria and Russia succeeded in defeating the Hungarian Revolution.

We'll have the chance to wander through the park and enjoy the fresh air. Surely one of the most beautiful National Parks in Europe, and the longest gorge in Romania, Nera Gorge-Beușnița National Park is a perfect place to spend one day if you are in Timisoara and what to escape the city and enjoy spending time in nature.

We will spend around 6 hours here overall and talk about the historical region of Banat and about the flora and fauna of the park. This will be a perfect chance for those passionate about photography as we will take some amazing photos throughout our trip. And I can point out to you the right spots and angles!

After so much walking, for those of you who are curious and hungry, you will have the chance to taste some traditional Romanian dishes at a local restaurant in Oravita.

Famous for Dracula and other blood-sucking creatures, Transilvania has a whole lot to offer apart from myths and legends! A mix of populations settled here about a 1000 years ago, and since then, they created a universe of their own!

I've conceived this multi day tour using all my experience as former history teacher and now, tour guide. Discovering Banat in one day!
We'll visit the Oravița Theatre, built over 200 years ago, one of the most amazing waterfalls in Europe and have a relaxing boat ride on the Danube river. I know the right captain with the right boat!

During our 45-minute boat ride, we will see the biggest rock sculpture in Europe (the best way to see it is from a boat on the Danube) and also two interesting caves and talk about their role throughout history.
We'll be hungry so - we can have a traditional Romanian lunch is before heading back to Timisoara.

Volcanoes and Dinosaurs Tour, from Timisoara

Hidden between mountains, Hateg Land was 70 million years ago a tropical island. Volcanoes and dinosaurs shared this prehistoric paradise long before anyone thought that Earth will be ruled by two-legged humanoids who will go there to take selfies with them.

An early early start will be an advantage! Kids can sleep on the way because we will drive for about two hours east, up to Densus. Famous for the medieval church, which people say that it is probably the oldest church still standing on Romanian soil, the village also hides the House of Volcanoes. A magic place for children and adults as well, where volcanoes will uncover all their mysteries.

I mentioned earlier something about dinosaurs. Well, here things are getting even more interesting! Because Hateg was an island, the dinosaurs who lived here were affected by a phenomenon known among scientist as Insular dwarfism. Yes, they were tiny! How, small were they really? Small for dinosaurs of course - about our size or a little bit bigger. Come and see!

A surprising full day trip to see how volcanoes shaped the surroundings and how special the Hateg dinosaurs really were!

If you don't have much time and want a taste of Transylvania, I have the best solution for you! You'll see the fairytale land of vampires and learn about its inhabitants in only one day! They're much more human than you think.

I propose Deva for our first stop. The gate to Transilvania on the Mures River was guarded by a citadel built on top of a hill that allowed perfect surveillance around. That the citadel is special - you might think already, the thing is that the hill upon it sits is also special! More on that, when we get there!

After only some 20 km we'll stop at the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara. Most of my guest described this place as being spectacular or even "theatrical". No wonder it's one of the most visited places in this part of the world!

We will leave for the "finale" in Sibiu! European capital of culture in 2007, Sibiu was actually called Hermannstadt and like his name sounds, it was a burg built by Germans in the 13th century. For sure a must see on your trip list!
