Explore Colon your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Colon tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Colon for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Glide by small boat across Gatun Lake to watch capuchin and howler monkeys in the trees, spot sloths and crocodiles along the shore, and listen for toucans. Your guide can also lead you on short rainforest walks in the San Lorenzo Protected Area near the mouth of the Chagres River to look for frogs, leafcutter ants, and bright birdlife.

Layover tours: If you are in port at Colón 2000 or Cristóbal, a quick private tour to the Agua Clara Locks visitor centre lets you see Neo-Panamax ships rise and fall while your guide explains the Canal expansion. With a bit more time, add Fort San Lorenzo for ocean views, breezes on the ramparts, and a short jungle drive that fits a tight schedule.

History tours: Explore the UNESCO-listed forts of Portobelo and San Lorenzo, where you can walk past rusted cannons, peek into powder rooms, and hear stories of pirates and colonial trade. In Portobelo, visit the Royal Customs House museum and the church that houses the famous Black Christ statue to learn about local traditions.

Colón is compact but not ideal for walking, and public transit is limited for visitors; private transportation makes touring smoother and safer. You can book chauffeured tours or ask your local guide for a private vehicle to cover the locks, fortifications, and rainforest in one outing.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Colon inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Colon

From Colón, nearby forts, canal viewpoints, islands, and rainforest make easy day trips, and your tour can zero in on history, nature, or beach time while keeping travel simple; these day trips also work well as private tours.

Portobelo: Explore the bay and the 17th century forts, step into the old customs house, and see the Black Christ church; the compact town fits history fans who want short walks, sea views, and a relaxed lunch by the water.

Agua Clara Locks and Gatun Lake: Watch neo-Panamax ships move through the expanded Panama Canal at the Agua Clara Visitor Center, then look for monkeys and birds along the lakeshore; this mix suits engineering buffs and wildlife spotters in one straightforward loop from Colón.

Fort San Lorenzo and the Chagres River: Walk the cliff-top fortress, scan for toucans and sloths in the rainforest, and trace the river that carried Spanish treasure; it is a solid pick if you like quiet sites, big views, and short trails.

Isla Grande: Take a quick boat from La Guaira to swim, snorkel, and linger at simple beach spots with fresh fish; the island fits a no-rush day where you balance water time and easy coastal walks based on the weather.

Panama City and Casco Viejo: Cross the isthmus for the old quarter’s brick lanes, street art, and broad skyline views from the causeway; food fans can add the fish market, while photo and architecture buffs get layered streets and plazas without a long drive back.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Colon most travellers miss.
