The Lord of the Rings put NZ on the world stage when the films were released. You have a great opportunity to visit on of the most spectacular film locations here in Canterbury. Mt. Sunday (Edoras) is a small mountain in the Rangitata head waters. This spot was chosen for its dramatic views of the southern alps as the back drop for Rohan and Helms Deep A must visit for any LOTR fan! or someone wanting a true NZ alpine experience Spend more time & have a relaxing experience that large group travel cannot provide. Travel at your own pace and stop when you want to stop
Your Christchurch tour itinerary
Pick up at Hotel or Port Travel across the Canterbury Plains, the largest flat area in NZ known for its land based farming. Stop for Toilets and Snacks in Rakaia. This is where I recommend getting takeaway food / drink for the afternoon as we are going back country! Lot's of good food options at the supermarket. Continue up to Mt. Sunday via a gravel (loose metal) road past beautiful alpine lakes and rivers. Photo stop at Lake Clearwater Spend time at Mt. Sunday soaking up the views and splendour the area provides. 30 minute easy walk to the base of Mt. Sunday. 45 min to the top. Depending of cruise timings we can spend up to 2 hours here. If time allows, return via Rakaia Gorge for Photo stops. Travel back to Lyttelton in time for the ship or back to your Hotel
