The drive was beautiful and we very much enjoyed our conversations with Abdelmoghit. He is very knowledgeable about the area and very friendly. Chefchaouen had just experienced some flooding, so some areas were damaged.

In recent years, Chefchaouen has become a very popular destination for tourists looking for authenticity and serenity. Chefchaouen is a picturesque medieval town located 120 km from Tangier in the Rif Mountains. Its blue-washed buildings and architectural style make it a unique medina in Morocco. It was the Sephardic Jews who introduced the tradition of painting their houses in light blue, a color thought to be a protection from the evil. Chefchaouen was founded in 1472 as a fortress town to fight off the the invading Portuguese who were enterinng Morocco from the north. It served as the main refuge for the Moriscos and Jews escaping from the Spanish Inquisition. In 1920, the Spanish troops entered the city, becoming part of the Spanish Morocco until our independence in 1956. The city is famous for its handicrafts, specifically woven blankets and woolen garments, as well as traditional goat cheese!

Abdel was wonderful. He met us at the arranged location with a sign with our name and it was smooth sailing from there. He provided interesting historical and cultural information along the way without being overbearing, allowing quiet time to enjoy the sites. Our focus was Chefchaouen, but when he learned we were leaving early the next day, he offered to show us around Tangier as well--a lovely bonus! We appreciated his casual style, insights on culture, and family stories.
Chefchaoen was a beautiful 2 hour drive throught the Moroccan countryside from Tangier. The "Blue City" is both pictureque and rich in history. Our guide, Moghit, is extremely knowlegable and thoughtful in his plan. We had a window into the Berber people and photos to last a lifetime. He customized our trip to our desires. He is ever kind and patient. This was our 3rd tour with Moghit. Yes, he is that good.
Abdel is one of the best guides we have had in our many trip with Tours by Locals. His English is perfect ( he is fluent in French, Spanish, Portuguese etc). He is easy to get along with, obliging, tolerant, and very kind. He is knowledgeable and had a broad overview of all the sites we visited over 3 days in Tangier , Chefchouen, Tétouan, and Asilah. We recommend him highly with no reservations.
This was our 2nd tour with Abdel in the 3 days we were in Tangier. His tour of Chefchaouen was fantastic! From him picking us up at the door of our riad, to our stop for tea and typical breakfast, to the tour of the Blue City, Abdel made sure my husband and I were well cared for at every step. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a tour guide while in Tangier.
We had a wonderful trip to Chefchaouen with Abedlmoghit El Jelili! He met us at the ferry station and had a van ready for the two hour trip….All the way he gave us information about the area and topography of Morocco while his expert driver attended the road. When we arrived in Chefchaouen, they took us to the highest area of the town for the scenic overview, and made our walking tour so much easier going downhill. The town is beautiful, enjoyed a wonderful lunch in the town. Highly recommend Abedlmoghit!
Journey from Tangier to Chefchaouen through the Western Rif Mountains area. Upon arrival, we start our exploration from Ras el Ma spring water where we can see Berber women hand washing clothes and blankets. Following, we take an extensive and incredibly interesting walking tour through the maze of alleys and narrow streets of the medina with numerous photo opportunities. We will continue towards Uta-el-Hammam square where the Great Mosque and the kasbah, home to a small Ethnographic Museum and an art gallery. Before leaving Chefchaouen, we will experience the best traditional food at one of the reputed restaurants in the old medina.
