Explore Mombasa your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Mombasa tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Mombasa for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Visit Haller Park to feed giraffes and see hippos, then snorkel the shallow reefs in Mombasa Marine National Park off Nyali or Bamburi. For a greener day, head to Shimba Hills National Reserve for forest views, sable antelope and the walk to Sheldrick Falls.

Adventure tours: Try kitesurfing lessons on Nyali Beach, or go scuba diving on local reefs and the MV Dania wreck with a certified dive centre. You can also paddleboard on Tudor Creek or join a deep-sea fishing charter out of Mtwapa Creek.

Layover tours: On a short stop from Moi International Airport or the SGR terminus, your guide can focus your time on Fort Jesus Museum, the spice market and Old Town lanes with carved doors. If traffic allows, add the landmark tusks on Moi Avenue or a quick circuit at Haller Park.

Old Town is walkable, but the city is spread out and matatus can be crowded. For stress-free moves, book chauffeured tours or ask your guide for tours with private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Mombasa inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Mombasa

From Mombasa, it’s easy to branch out to beaches, forests, and islands that work well as day trips, and your tour can lean into wildlife, history, or snorkelling without a long drive.

Diani Beach and Tiwi Beach: Cross the Likoni Ferry and head south for wide sands, clear lagoon water, and steady winds that suit kitesurfing; if you want simple beach time, reef snorkelling at low tide, and a relaxed lunch in Ukunda, this stretch checks those boxes.

Shimba Hills National Reserve: A short run inland brings cooler air, rolling hills, and coastal forest where you can spot elephants, rare sable antelope, and birdlife, and if you like light hiking, the trail to Sheldrick Falls adds a change of pace from the coast.

Wasini Island and Kisite–Mpunguti Marine Park: Sail by dhow to coral reefs that are known for dolphins, sea turtles, and bright fish; this is the pick if you want a marine-focused day with snorkelling, calm lagoon stops, and a simple Swahili seafood lunch on the island.

Malindi and Watamu: For a blend of culture and coast, pair the 12th‑century Gede Ruins and Arabuko Sokoke Forest with time on Watamu’s beaches and Mida Creek, so history fans, birders, and paddleboard lovers all find what they like in one loop of the north coast.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Mombasa most travellers miss.
