My initial interest in Japan was sparked by the stories told by my boss - a first generation Japanese American - at my after school part time job in Seattle, Washington. Stories of his Japanese childhood in Iwakuni, and the experiences Japanese immigrants faced when they came to the United States impacted me and I went on to earn a BA in Secondary Education and Japanese history at Western Washington University and, while there, made my first trip to Japan in 1971 as a home-stay/study-abroad student. In my nearly forty five years in Japan since those days I have witnessed first-hand Japan's rapid economic development and its real estate and stock market bubble that burst in the late 80s bringing everything to a rapid halt. Since then, Japan's two plus lost decades continue to this day. My experience includes twenty years as a salaryman in a Japanese company and a teacher of Japanese Social Studies at Nishimachi International School. Now focused on Japan, her history, culture, and society, I am passionate about providing insightful and meaningful tours that create a vivid experience for visitors to take back home. Besides providing insightful and historically oriented Tokyo tours that I am happy to customise, I introduce people to other locations in Japan like Hakone, Nikko, Kamakura, Kyoto, and up the ancient Nakasendo that linked Edo - today's Tokyo - to Kyoto for over 265 years of the Edo period. Currently I am teaching tour guiding classes as well as A Japanese History class at Temple University, Tokyo Campus. I also continue my practice of Nihon Buyo, traditional Japanese dance, that has its origins in Kabuki, and am a certified practitioner of ikebana. My stage appearances have been featured on Japanese TV and in Japanese newspapers. BA in Secondary Ed. and Japanese History, Japanese Drivers License, Certificarte of Proficiency in Sogetsu Ikebana, 35 Years in Hanayagi School of Buyo - Japanese traditional dance, Long-Term-Permanent-Resident of Japan

Overview of your Nikko tour

Nikko, the word means sunlight or sunshine, is a city located in the mountains of Tochigi Prefecture. Located approximately 140km north of Tokyo and approximately 35km west of Utsunomiya, the capital of Tochigi, it is a popular destination for Japanese and international tourists, visiting the mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (Tosho-gu), his grandson Iemitsu (Iemitsu-byo Taiyu-in), as well as the Futarasan Shrine, which dates from the year 767. Elevations range from 200 to almost 1, 000m. The mountains west of the main city are part of Nikko National Park and contain some of the country's most spectacular waterfalls and scenic trails.

Our experience was amazing from the moment we booked through tour end. Patrick engaged us immediately providing richer description to ensure it suited our expectations. He also provided links to more reading resources and helpful instruction on train travel. We communicated often. His English is perfect. Some bus travel was involved in our trip and Patrick organized it, and all admission tickets in advance. We did not need to wait in lines. I’ve saved the best for last - Patrick’s knowledge of Japanese culture and history is extraordinary. He put everything we saw and experienced in context, in a delightful manner. This description cannot do it justice. We left the tour ( he escorted us right to the train station ) determined to learn more and anxious to return to Japan and Nikko.

Absolutely Fantastic. Patrick lives in the area and has a personal interest all that he does. Over two weeks we did 8 different privately guided tours around Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Patrick we the best guide we used. He knows the history and can explain it in a fashion which brings it to life with stories and cultural references. He is well prepared and has great local knowledge. He knows people along the way and made the tour very customized to our interests. I highly recommend this tour and his Hakone Tour.

Patrick was an amazing tour guide offering a wide range of experiences and expertise on the entire area around Nikko. We will definitely be interested in booking him again for other options in the area when we return to Japan.
