MAURA B. Foligno, Umbria, Italy "Wherever you go, go with all your heart". (Confucius) I was born and raised in Umbria and, in my twenties, like so many young people, I packed my bag and traveled the world. I spent time in Paris, Istanbul, Madrid - in fact all the major European capitals and also spent several months travelling throughout the USA. On my return I began teaching Italian at the Università degli Stranieri di Perugia, then quickly realized that I wanted to share not just my language but also my passion for my heritage that is the natural beauty and the art of my land. I studied Art History and gained my Umbria Tour Guide's License 24 years ago and have never looked back. Umbria is a land of treasures! It is home to some of the most incredible pieces of artwork in the world. At the end of a working day I always feel a sense of gratitude and pride for the unforgettable experiences which I have been able to share with my guests… These might include a day of walking the cobbled streets of magnificent hamlets such as Spello or the feeling of being almost overwhelmed by the famous and revolutionary frescoes painted by Giotto in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi; we might have finished the day by savoring a glass of Sagrantino together while admiring the breathtaking view of the gentle countryside. The choice of authentic cultural experiences which we can share is almost limitless. I look forward to giving you a unique gift from my Umbria. It's a gift which cannot be lost and I hope will continue to give you the sense of an invisible link back here to my home forever. Spoleto is a beautiful and fascinating town of culture, first and foremost, due to its ancient history. Today the special energy of the "Festival of the Two Worlds" maintains its position as one of the most important destinations for anybody who is interested in music, theater and dance. The town is still connected to the sacred woods of Monteluco, which were strictly protected by the ancient magistracy and which inspired the outstanding Renaissance artist Filippo Lippi's striking frescoes inside the Cathedral. This beautiful city is like an open-air museum and was greatly admired by Goethe who fell in love with the remarkable architecture of the 13th century Ponte delle Torri. The tour will focus on the 12th century Cathedral with its breathtaking Romanesque façade. If you are an art lover the exploration of the interior will be a unique experience and will give you the chance to learn about the art of Filippo Lippi. We'll take an inside look at his extravagant life which might leave you dumbfounded!
-We will take a nice climb to reach the impressive structure of the Medieval Bridge of the Towers which is just below the Pope's Fortress, both right at the top of the town. - It will then be easy to stroll down to the Cathedral which is home to some of the most famous artworks of the region. -We'll take a pause in Piazza del Mercato where I will show you the remains of the Roman Temple with the Arch of Druso and Germanicus; -We will conclude our day with the Roman Theatre, in the lower part of the ancient city.
