Things to do in Sligo

Sitting pretty on the land between two bodies of water - Lough Gill to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west - Sligo attracts travelers searching for an Irish town small enough to be intimate, yet large enough to be engaging. Take a private Sligo tour and explore the Gateway to the Northwest in the company of a local guide. Begin your visit at Sligo Abbey, a beautiful building with a rough history. Built in 1253 as a friary for Dominican monks, it burned down in 1414, was ransacked in 1595 and attacked again in 1641. Your local guide can point out the various layers and renovations. Sligo's riverfront is a lovely place for a stroll. Pop into small shops or take a seat in one of the many cafes, restaurants and pubs and sink a few pints while the Garavogue River flows past. When it's time to explore further afield, your guide can arrange visits to picturesque Lough Gill, or can drive you to secluded bays and coves to watch seals bask on the rocks and surfers ride the waves.
