If hiking an active volcano is part of your lifetime bucket list, I got you covered. In 2004 this was the first volcano I ever hiked, and it's the one I visit with more frequency throughout a working season. After being dormant for over 70 years, the Pacaya began erupting vigorously in 1961 and has been active since then. If you are visiting Guatemala at the right moment, you may even watch lava flowing on the surface. This is a light-moderate hike, family-friendly and at the park's entrance its also possible to rent horses if you wish to ride them on the trail.
Excellent tour of not only the volcano but got insight into the history, culture and geography of the area. It was obvious he knew the area and local people. Do not hesitate to book with him. We are so glad we did rather than some of the mass tours. Spouse had broken ankle before going and was able to accommodate the pace since it was just us. Do not hesitate to reach out and book with him! So glad we did.
Nestor was a great guide. We had lots of drive time and he answered all our questions about Guatemala, the food, the agriculture, the people etc. in excellent English. Our hike at pacaya volcano was strenuous for me, but my husband and nephew were Troupers! My trusty horse Churro really helped me out! I have already recommended Nestor to others in our group...
Nestor was a wonderful guide! We ended up stuck in a traffic jam and the experience took way longer than any of us planned but Nestor acted as though he had all the time we wanted and was very patient and accommodating. His English is really good and he stopped to explain different markers along the way. We hiked the volcano with a local guide he hired as well and he was really great and positive. This was a memorable experience for our whole family and we have passed Nestor's name on to many others.
Our day long tour was fantastic. Nestor is incredibly knowledgeable and has an outstanding command of Mayan and Guatemalan history which he expertly weaves into the day. We had a last minute change to our schedule and he quickly accommodated us. Our day long tour included Antigua and volcanos, and throughout the tour he checked to be sure we were having fun. If you have a chance to visit this beautiful country you will love seeing it with Nestor. He is one of the best guides we've ever had. THANK YOU
Nestor was a great guide. He was informative and prepared. He explained many things to the kids about the volcano, rocks, and plants. He was very patient with my husband when he got long series of muscle cramps when we were on the way back down. I recommend him if you need English, have kids, or have the kind of health issues where you can hike the volcano but need to go at your own pace.
This was an awesome hike/horse ride and Nestor was an awesome guide. Todd is handicapped and could not walk the hike so Nestor arranged to get horses for all of us to ride the volcano. Nestor pointed things out and explained things along the way. He patiently answered many questions and put up with our sometimes silly sense of humour. Nestor was very flexible and stopped in Antigua to show us other sights we were interested in. 5 stars all the way! Thank you Nestor!
