City of Sydney and over 250 years of coal mining history
Overview of your Sydney tour
Dating back to the 18th century when coal mining was first discovered on Isle Royale - today known as Cape Breton Island, coal has made its mark on the land, the people and has shaped it's culture. Take the journey with me as I share with you some stories as we tour through the local community. The city of Sydney is rich in history stemming from the turn of the 20th century when a young gentlemen decided to place industry in a logistical heart, you see - Sydney Harbour is 1/2 way between the Caribbean and Europe and it has a natural depth that lends well to cargo shipping (and today, cruise ships). You will not only see the highlights of this glorious city, you will be transported to a vibrant town where coal mining has truly shifted the cultural fabric. Today coal mining is nearly finished with only one active mine, and this former coal mining town is now a very active fishing port. We are after all, an island of very hard working and proud people. Come join us, let us share this with you.
Your Sydney tour itinerary
We start our tour in the Historic North End - a look back in time from 1774 to modern day. From here we will explore some of various industries and vibrant communities that encompass the City of Sydney, population 24, 000. We will also visit the First Nations reserve of Membertou. One of five First Nations communities on the Island, you will see the progress made by the Chief and his community to become the fastest economically grown First Nations Community in Canada. (Rated ISO 9000). We make our way to Glace Bay (nearby town) where the Miners Museum sits on top a plateau just above the North Atlantic Ocean. On site, you will visit the museum inside, artifacts on the grounds and the buildings that show the mining life as it was for this community. There is also a restaurant on site that may be available for a light lunch if you choose (and providing it is available on the date of your tour).
