Ammonite Falls is a true wonder of nature. This beautiful waterfall is accessible through an hour long hike in the hills of Nanaimo. Close enough to town but still through the back-country, this hike has a few steep hills and several stairs down to the falls, but other than that it's mainly flat ground. Throughout the hike I will recount stories of the forest and teach you about our native, old growth and replanted ecosystems. I'll also be talking about all the animals that inhabit our forests and sometimes even our neighbourhoods! From the beginning of the trail we will be entering second growth forest, walking through different ecosystems and finally reaching the falls. It must be mentioned that there's a lot of fossils around the falls, just falling out of the canyon wall. You will be free to explore around the canyon and possibly find something of your own! The rocks at the bottom of the creek are full of vegetal fossils and the walls might expose and free some ancient sea creatures trapped in stone.
·Once we met at the Ammonite Falls Parking lot, we will start our hike from there. The round trip should take between 2h and 2h30 hours. ·The trails winds through a managed forest area where I will introduce you to our local forest practices. ·Moving deeper in the woods you will actually emerge our into a small clear cut full of berry bushes before entering older more mature lush forest along the river that flows down the Fall. ·Afterwards, we'll reach a platform at the top of the Fall from where we will have an amazing view down at the waterfall, but the real deal is when we take the stairs all the way down the base of the Fall! ·We will explore the river bed, sandstone walls, fossils and river's edge for roughly 30 minutes before retracing our steps to the starting point of the tour.
