Overview of your Berat tour
Step inside the living history of Berat through a visit to its extraordinary Castle, one of the oldest continuously inhabited fortified settlements in the Balkans. This experience is for travelers who want more than a standard historical tour. During our walk through the Castle’s ancient stone pathways - history, architecture, legends and local life - all come together naturally. We will explore Byzantine churches, Ottoman traces, viewpoints and the fascinating layers of civilizations that shaped this city over the centuries. A special highlight of this experience is the visit to the famous Onufri Iconographic Museum. We will also visit a traditional family house, recognized as a First-Category Cultural Monument, inside the Castle walls, offering an authentic glimpse into Albanian hospitality and local life still preserved today. During the summer months, I would not recommend starting the tour during the hottest hours of the day, as the temperatures can be quite high.
Your Berat tour itinerary
• The tour can begin either from your accommodation in Berat or directly at the entrance of the Castle of Berat, depending on your preference. • At the main gate of the Fortress, we will observe its different periods of construction and transformation. • Continuing inside the Castle walls, we arrive at the Square of the Great Constantine, one of the central points of the fortress. • Visit the Church of Saint Mary of Blachernae, the oldest Byzantine church inside the Castle. • Our tour continues to the famous Onufri Iconographic Museum, home to remarkable icons, religious artifacts etc. • Through ancient stone paths, we reach the Acropolis area. • We also explore the ruins of the White Mosque and the Red Mosque. • Reaching the panoramic viewpoint overlooking nearly all of Berat, you will be able to take the best pictures. • To conclude the experience, we visit a traditional 300-year-old house inside the Castle, where travelers are welcomed according to long-preserved Albanian hospitality traditions.
