Explore Chachapoyas your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Chachapoyas tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Chachapoyas for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Walk through cloud forest to hear oropendolas and spot tanagers on the approach to Gocta Falls, with chances to see orchids and butterflies along the way. Bird lovers can detour to the Huembo Reserve near Pomacochas to look for the marvellous spatuletail hummingbird at feeders.

Hiking tours: Tackle the Gocta trail to the base pool for a misty payoff, or choose the Yumbilla waterfall circuit near Cuispes to visit multiple cascades on forest paths. Your guide adjusts distance and pace, and can add short canyon viewpoints like Huancas Sonche for big scenery with little effort.

Family tours: Ride the cable car toward the Kuelap complex to explore accessible areas or view the fortress from designated points, depending on current conditions, then try a simple pottery workshop in Huancas. Families often enjoy a gentler Gocta approach with horseback support and a stop for local coffee in Cocachimba.

Chachapoyas town is walkable, but major sights are spread along mountain roads with limited public transport. Ask your guide about private transportation or book a chauffeured tour to reach waterfalls, reserves, and villages comfortably.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Chachapoyas inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Chachapoyas

Use Chachapoyas as your base and head into the cloud-forest valleys for day trips to ancient citadels, tall waterfalls, and cliff tombs nearby, and these make smooth private tours focused on archaeology, hiking, or nature watching.

Kuélap: Ride the cable car from Nuevo Tingo and explore massive stone walls and round house ruins sitting above the clouds; this suits you if you like pre-Inca history, sweeping views, and slow, thoughtful walks through a hilltop site.

Gocta Waterfall: Hike from Cocachimba or San Pablo to a two-tier cascade that drops into thick forest, which is great if you enjoy a steady trail, birdlife, and a cool swim at the base when conditions allow.

Karajía Sarcophagi: Walk a short path to see human-shaped sarcophagi set on a cliff ledge, a striking look at Chachapoya funerary art that caters to your interest in ancient cultures and easy outings with big payoffs.

Revash and the Leymebamba Museum: Pair painted cliff mausoleums at Revash with the museum in Leymebamba that safeguards recovered mummies and textiles, ideal if you like a mix of light hiking, detailed exhibits, and a clear story of the region.

Quiocta Cave: Step into a limestone cave with stalactites and stalagmites on a guided route that keeps things safe, which works well if you want a bit of adventure, geology, and a different pace from ruins and waterfalls.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Chachapoyas most travellers miss.
