I've lived and worked in San Francisco since 1975, and am quite fond of—and, perhaps, slightly jaundiced toward—my long-adopted home, a. k. a. "The City". I have been numbered as a local student/practitioner of fine, commercial and industrial arts: commercial graphics, multi-media design, and as a craftsman in our once-mighty commercial printing industry. I'm occasionally zealous in defense/restoration of natural habitats, parks, regional agriculture, and historic architecture. Special appreciation must go to food—glorious food! Cosmopolitanism has its benefits; San Francisco is a foodie's paradise. The ride never ends. Truly I am a tourist in my own life here in "The City", "Baghdad by the Bay", "The Queen of the Pacific", "Fog City", or (more poetically) "the cool, grey city of love". This walking tour starts around Union Square downtown and zig-zags through the top destination neighborhoods in Our Fair City. We admire deluxe shopping, historic architecture, colorful Chinatown shops and alleyways, the original historic center of town, the only whole neighborhood to survive the 1906 fires, Beatnik Broadway, the Italian district of North Beach and, finally, the Fisherman's Wharf District. The exact itinerary is flexible. There are very few steep inclines so wheelchairs or walkers may manage with moderate difficulty. Options along the way include stopping for coffees/expressos/bakery/candy. We'll end up at a famous location in Fisherman's Wharf, e. g. Ghirardelli Square, Pier 45 (THE original Fisherman's Wharf), Scoma's, In-and-Out, or Pier 39. Get the real feelz: let your feet do the walking!
We include: 1) Start downtown around Union Square or nearby hotel; 2) Enter original Chinatown via the Dragon Gate; 3) Explore shops and alleyways of historic Chinatown and original town center, Portsmouth Square; 4) Discover why the 'worst' neighborhood, the Barbary Coast, survived the 1906 fires; 5) Take in relict remnants of past Beatnik and girlie-show glories on Broadway; 6) Indulge in "La Bella Vita Italiana" in North Beach 7) Emerge into Fisherman's Wharf.
