Born in Kirkwall, my connection to Orkney is physical. Long before UNESCO status, I was visiting Maeshowe as a schoolboy and later maintained the technical infrastructure across the islands. I don’t operate with a "guide persona." I prefer a real exchange over a one-way broadcast. My daily discipline involves constant archival study and field exploration; I treat the landscape as a technical project rather than a standard sightseeing loop. There is a Danish saying I adhere to: Competence is expected, not advertised. In Orkney, the story is never fully completed, I am simply here to help you navigate it.

Overview of your Orkney tour

The ideal full-day introduction to Orkney, paced properly and completely crowd-free. Led by a born-and-bred local guide, this private tour focuses on Orkney’s Neolithic sites, Viking heritage, with wartime history without the rush of a group bus. Enjoy dedicated on-site guiding, plenty of rest time, and travel in an immaculate vehicle with no strangers sharing your space. Because this is entirely private, your itinerary is never fixed. If you want to linger longer or change direction, your guide can adapt the route around your preferences. Originally built as a reliable shore excursion for cruise guests, it works just as well for first-time visitors staying on the islands seeking an introduction. Standard booking is set to 3 guests, but I can accommodate families of 4 or larger groups by arrangement. Listing space is limited, so for custom routes or specific historical focuses, reach out for my full service portfolio. As a top-rated local operator for years, I enjoy a challenge.

Calum charmingly introduced us to Orkney - showing us major sites and answering all our many questions about the best places to go to once we were on our own. He was knowledgable and informative and helpful and patient. We felt he had helped us to touch the real Orkney. Excellent tour.

Absolutely amazing! Calum is a wealth of knowledge! He was very informative in a storytelling kind of way. You can tell he loves his country and loves what he does. I wish we could have spent more time with him! He gets so excited about sharing everything he knows with you. We had an absolutely awesome day! Plus, this guy responds to your messages very quickly. He is really on top of things! I would highly recommend this tour!

Callum was outstanding. He had an itinerary for us planned but adjusted it when he saw that we had some mobility issues. He was extremely knowledgeable in all things Orkney and his commentary was interesting adn thorough. He was a delight to be with. I highy recommend Callum to anyone considering a tour of Kirkwall and environs. He did disappoint me when he had a burger and chips for lunch, but I can overlook that in light of his many virtues.

Calum was incredible! My friends and I weren't sure what to expect from the Orkneys. The tour Calum provided blew our minds. From the windswept beauty of the local landscapes, Neolithic/Viking history, to the charm and spirit of the people, Calum worked hard to share it all with us. The personal history and pride in his home shone through every aspect of the tour. He was informative, entertaining, and flexible. I hope to come back to the Orkneys again and have Calum guide us again. I can't recommend him highly enough!

This was such a special experience! Only our group of 4 with Calum, no “tour bus” hassles with too short or too long stops, missing photos or strangers. Calum was born on Orkney and shared anecdotes from growing up here that made us love the island even more. He gave us options that were not in brochures and were the high points of the day in every case! He made it a point to ask about our interests and made the day flexible based on what he learned. Despite cold wind and rain it was a wonderful experience. I actually took notes to read more about the sites and even “recent” history. Calum knows it all! I will be looking at Tours by Locals sites for all future travels. If you plan a trip to Orkney - And you definitely should!!! Then make sure to try and book Calum.
