Hello, I'm Mary. Welcome to Orkney. We are (almost) 59 degrees north of the equator and 524 miles from the Arctic Circle. After a surprise birthday visit to Orkney in November 2012, we relocated our family here six months later. Becoming a driver guide was a natural progression for me, I love to meet people from all over the world I love history and I love driving, all these combined means I can show you the historical marvels and beautiful scenery I see every day. I am happy to tailor your tour to your requirements, from 4 hours to multiple days. Shore excursions are very welcome, there is a lot to see in one day. Orkney has thousands of years of human habitation on these islands. There are many relics of the distant past and also the not so distant past to be explored from standing stones and Neolithic homesteads to towering turbines of renewable energy, throw into the mix Vikings, Scottish rule, the Hudson Bay Company, herring fleets, World Wars, distilleries, breweries and even an Arctic Explorer, it's hard to know where to start and where to finish. Mary is a fantastic tour guide! She took us to the usual historic sites but customized the tour so we could see one of the two golf courses on the island. She has a good knowledge of the history of the island and gave us a good understanding of what it is like to live on Orkney Island. Very fun tour!
Mary provided an excellent tour and a lovely day touring from the cruise port of Kirkwall through the island's sights and history. It was very much enjoyed! She provided good communication prior to the tour, and adapted the tour to our needs and wishes. Thank you so much, Mary!
Mary helpfully brought her vehicle right to the ship to meet us. Because of the gale we could not go to the archaeological site at Skara Brae, but Mary gave us a good briefing and we saw the video and exhibits at the visitor centre. I think we got the full story. At the Italian chapel Mary gave is a detailed explanation of the craftsmanship and materials used. We had a very good visit to the cathedral. During our drive through the island, Mary gave us a real insight into Orcadiam life. We are glad she was our guide.
Such an informative and pleasant visit to the main sites with Mary. She answered all our questions, told us about other things we can do and is both fun and interesting. Importantly she had checked what we had wanted to see beforehand/what we are interested in. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
