Explore Windhoek your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Windhoek tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Windhoek for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Head to Daan Viljoen Game Reserve for an easy game drive or a guided walk to see zebra, wildebeest, and birdlife close to town, or visit N/a’an ku sê for a sanctuary tour near the airport. Avis Dam is great for morning birding with a local birder.

Adventure tours: Hike the Khomas Hochland hills on marked trails with big views, or ride the singletrack at the IJG/Farm Windhoek trail network with a guide who can match routes to your pace. For something rugged, tackle a scenic 4x4 pass like Bosua and cap it with sundowners on a granite koppie.

Off The Beaten Path tours: Taste kapana beef at the Single Quarters market in Katutura and learn about local life at the Penduka craft centre by Goreangab Dam. Your guide can also introduce you to small shebeens and neighbourhood bakeries that travellers rarely find alone.

Getting around: The CBD is walkable in short sections, but the city is spread out and public transit is limited to shared taxis. Ask your guide about private transportation or book a chauffeured tour for smoother logistics.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Windhoek inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Windhoek

Use Windhoek as your base and add easy day trips to nearby reserves, desert rock formations, and small towns, with tours shaped around wildlife, culture, or scenery.

Daan Viljoen Game Reserve: A short hop from the city gets you giraffe, zebra, and antelope on quiet roads and simple walking trails, which suits photography and birdwatching, and your tour can time the visit for cooler hours when animals move.

Okahandja & Craft Market: Known for wood carvings and a lively open-air market, this town also holds important Herero history, so if you like culture and handmade work, your tour can include time to talk with artisans and stop for local bites.

Spitzkoppe: These granite peaks rise straight from the desert; you get short hikes, arches, and rock art sites, which is great if you enjoy geology and wide landscapes, and your tour can plan a long day with a relaxed pace and sunset light for photos.

Gross Barmen Hot Springs: Warm mineral pools and a calm dam make it an easy-going escape, so if you prefer a slower day, your tour can mix soaking, a simple picnic, and birding along the water.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Windhoek most travellers miss.
