You will be picked up from Essaouira in the morning to start your journey to the berber market, the weekly souk which takes place on Wednesdays, is a total immersion in a Berber market where parking lots are made for donkeys and the most modest stalls, sources of amazement! The construction of LA SUCRERIE, attributed to the Saadian dynasty, dates from around 1578. The remains of the ocher ramparts are the remains of an aqueduct which linked the factory to the Ksob wadi. Many remains of sugar loaf mussels were found on the site, which now presents only a splendid landscape where nature has reclaimed its rights among the argan trees. The Gnaouas of Essaouira are the descendants of the former sugar factory workers. Stop in a berber family for thea. Rachid is personable, easy company. He showed us people and areas that few tourists would be able to see. We really enjoyed the lunch with his kind family in their home. We were able to see how families outside of the city live. The chicken was wonderful, along with the tomato and angara salad.
We started our 2-week Morocco trip in Essaouira with Rachid. It was a great choice. We enjoyed the Berber market a lot. It was a bit of a drive, but a good way to see some countryside. We loved the argan cooperative, and lunch at his family home was really special. We learned about local and Moroccan history and definitely appreciated the extra time he spent with us. Rachid is kind, patient and a wonderful tour guide. He set a high standard for the rest of our trip. We loved our tour and highly recommend!
