Welcome to Penang the Pearl of the Orient ! Penang has many facets, some of them are world renowned such as its myriads of street food and nyonya cuisine. Its capital city George Town, a world UNESCO heritage site is a living heritage of diversity of cultures, religions, races and festivals. But lesser known is some of its beautiful natural areas waiting for you to explore : ~ nestled in the north western corner of the island is Penang National Park, the world's smallest national park but boasts of at least 5 natural habitats i. e. the unique seasonal meromictic lake, lowland rainforest, freshwater streams, sea & turtle nesting beaches and mangrove. ~ pristine mangrove ecosystem on the west coast of the island ~ the central hilly region is 2 large permanent forest reserves and main water catchment area ~ Penang hills ~ Penang Botanic Gardens, famous for its majestic waterfall As a born and bred Penangite and professional licensed nature guide who specialises in ecotourism, it will be my pleasure to show you some of the island's hidden natural and cultural heritage. I do hope during your visit to the island you will take back some of the landscape, cultural, culinary beauty and wonderful images of its natural places. The western part of Penang island is the last green belt where traditional agro farming of fruits and spices and fishing communities are found. Unfortunately this old town is undergoing rapid housing development and all above sights and experience are disappearing fast and shall be gone in near future. To savour the present condition while it can still be enjoyed.
Pick up from hotel/port and drive along the north coastal road to the western side of Penang island. On the way we pass through beach resort area Batu Ferringhi, coastal fishing village Telok Bahang where Penang National Park is located. From here We then take the hilly road where fruit orchards mainly durians and spice plantations such as nutmeg and cloves are found. We pass by fruit stalls, stop for durian feast at one of the roadside stalls, a waterfall and a 4th generation nutmeg factory before we reach Balik Pulau town. Tour around the old town to look at traditional trades and sample some local food and drink such as fresh nutmeg juice and laksa at the market. Old lifestyle of the farming and fishing community is to be found here. Unfortunately this old town is undergoing rapid housing development and all above sights and experience are disappearing fast and shall be gone in near future. It is therefore a pleasure to savour the present.
