Iramkarapte — Hello everyone! (“Iramkarapte” means “hello” in Ainu, the Indigenous language of Hokkaido.) I’m Josh, a local guide based in Hakodate, Hokkaido. I was born and raised up in Hakodate. I love traveling, taking photos, and discovering great local food wherever I go. My passion for languages started when I studied English in New Zealand, which opened my eyes to different cultures and perspectives. After returning to Japan, I majored in English and Tourism, joined a school trip to Canada, and later went back to New Zealand for a working holiday. These experiences deepened my love for connecting with people through travel. My language journey is still ongoing, and I’d love to share with you why Hakodate is one of the most beautiful and fascinating places in the world. On my days off, I enjoy relaxing in a cozy café with a good cup of coffee and planning my next adventure. I would be more than happy to show you the beauty of Hokkaido. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you,

Hakodate, located at the southern tip of Hokkaido, is a city where Japanese and Western cultures beautifully blend. Once one of Japan’s first international ports, Hakodate still preserves its historical charm—from elegant churches and brick warehouses to lively local markets and panoramic viewpoints. On this private walking tour, you’ll stroll through Hakodate’s must-see areas while learning how the city developed from the late Edo period to modern times. Visit iconic sites such as the Morning Market, Motomachi District with its Western-style buildings, and the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse area. If the weather allows, take the ropeway up Mt. Hakodate for one of Japan’s most famous night views. As a local guide, I’ll share insider stories and tips that go beyond the guidebooks, helping you experience Hakodate through local eyes. The route and pace can be customized according to your interests and stamina, making this a comfortable and memorable introduction to Hakodate’s history and culture.
