(Confucius) I was born and raised in Umbria and, in my twenties, like so many young people, I packed my bag and traveled the world. I spent time in Paris, Istanbul, Madrid - in fact all the major European capitals and also spent several months travelling throughout the USA. On my return I began teaching Italian at the Università degli Stranieri di Perugia, then quickly realized that I wanted to share not just my language but also my passion for my heritage that is the natural beauty and the art of my land. I studied Art History and gained my Umbria Tour Guide's License 24 years ago and have never looked back. Umbria is a land of treasures! It is home to some of the most incredible pieces of artwork in the world. At the end of a working day I always feel a sense of gratitude and pride for the unforgettable experiences which I have been able to share with my guests… These might include a day of walking the cobbled streets of magnificent hamlets such as Spello or the feeling of being almost overwhelmed by the famous and revolutionary frescoes painted by Giotto in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi; we might have finished the day by savoring a glass of Sagrantino together while admiring the breathtaking view of the gentle countryside. The choice of authentic cultural experiences which we can share is almost limitless. I look forward to giving you a unique gift from my Umbria. St. Francis gave birth to a new spirit made of his powerful message of love, peace and sensitivity to the environment which still has a broad timeless appeal. He took Jesus' message of simplicity and non-materialism to heart and challenged the decadence of the Roman Church. I will show you St. Francis' most beloved place, the Eremo delle Carceri. You will learn why Francis was naturally drawn towards prayer and contemplation while sensing his delight in nature amongst the green woods of Mount Subasio and the intimate caves built by the friars. It will be an authentic experience for those travelers who are not in a hurry and have time to listen to the silence. It all began in the intimate church of San Damiano where the Crucifix spoke to him and St. Francis' adventure began. We will meet the local friars here. Francis founded his order in the austere little church called Porziuncola. At that time, it was surrounded by forests. 450 years later the huge Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli was built around it
We had the most wonderful time. Maura's wisdom and historical knowledge of Assisi and the Church was phenomenal! We loved her wit and laughter, not to mention introducing us to the very nice leather and jewelry shops. Clicking with someone in such a short period of time doesn't happen very often. Maura is an excellent guide with ease of communication and command of the facts. Eremo delle Carceri is a must visit for anyone interested in Saint Francis and is an evocative and emotional environment. Bravo Maura!
Maura was super sweet and another veteran tour guide and Italian-born but could speak very good English. She along with her friend, our driver, for the day were very good at getting us all around Assisi and we were able to get in a lot of sites in our four hours including the Eremo delle Carceri, San Damiano Church, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli with the Porziuncola and Rocco Maggiore.
Maura was a wonderful guide! We booked 2 tours for a total of 6 hours one day in Assisi. She is very knowledgeable about the town and most important to us was her knowledge of St. Francisco. We covered a lot of ground and saw parts of Assisi that weren't on the large group tours. She arranged for a driver to transport us as we moved outside the city. She has a great passion for her job and takes a lot of pride in her region.
I would give Maura 10 stars if I could. We did back to back tours with her and the day flew by. She is knowledgeable, excited about sharing the history of the area, easy to be with and made sure we were taken care if throughout the day. We did 6 tours over 4 days with Maura. She was amazing and quickly felt like a member of our family vs our guide. We combined this tour of the area surrounding Assisi with the tour of Assisi itself for a full and wonderful day.
