Asti & Canelli: Sparkling Wines, Unesco Cellars and Sweet Traditions

Discover two of southern Piedmont’s most fascinating destinations on a private tour combining history, landscapes and authentic local flavours. We will begin in Asti, exploring its elegant historic centre, medieval streets, characteristic squares and remarkable churches. Here, we will also visit a traditional local nougat producer and enjoy a tasting of torrone, one of the city’s most delicious specialities. We will then continue to Canelli, the heart of the region’s sparkling wine tradition, to visit the extraordinary Underground Cathedrals, historic cellars carved into the limestone hills and recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Their long galleries, brick vaults and naturally constant temperature create the ideal environment for ageing traditional-method sparkling wines. The experience will end with a walk along the Sternia, the ancient cobbled road leading towards Canelli Castle, with beautiful views over the town and the surrounding vineyard-covered hills.

We will begin with a guided walk through the historic centre of Asti, discovering its most characteristic squares, medieval towers, elegant streets and important churches. Along the way, I will share stories about the city’s past, traditions and strong connection with the surrounding countryside. We will then visit a traditional nougat producer, where we will learn more about this local speciality and enjoy a tasting of Asti torrone. Afterwards, we will travel to Canelli for a visit to one of its famous Underground Cathedrals. Inside these historic cellars, carved deep into the limestone hills, we will explore vaulted tunnels and discover the secrets of traditional sparkling wine production and ageing. We will conclude with a walk along the Sternia, Canelli’s ancient cobbled street, enjoying panoramic views over the castle, the town and the surrounding vineyards.
