I know every inch of this part of Ireland. I have walked the coastline, climbed the hills and researched the stories. Let me show you the oldest rocks in Ireland, a 5000 year old farm system and spectacular sea cliffs. This is a truly memorable tour with a great deal of variety. You will visit ruined monasteries, holy wells, a superb sea stack and a boisterous blow hole. It's a whistle stop tour of the history of Ireland from the formation of its rocks more than one billion years ago, through the neolithic farms created 5000 years ago, to Ireland's impact in 1944, on the outcome of the D-Day Landings. You will have lots of opportunity to take fantastic photographs en-route that will fascinate your friends and family back home. As usual I will tell you lots of stories, to keep you entertained en-route. If there is anything that you would like me to add to the tour please let me know. My objective it to ensure that you have a memorable visit to this magnificent part of Ireland.
-We will head towards the north coast of Mayo overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. -We will visit the heritage town of Killala where you will encounter a 11th century round tower and the smallest cathedral in Ireland. The French army made a landing near here to support a failed Irish rebellion. -Heading west we will visit Ballycastle and Downpatrick Head with its impressive sea stack, blowhole and promontory fort. -We will visit the Ceide Fields to explore the remains of a field system created by Neolithic farmers 5000 years ago. -The market town of Belmullet will be followed by a visit to the beautiful beaches of Blacksod Bay and the only square lighthouse in Ireland. Starvation, eviction, emigration and tragic drownings had a big influence on the population in this area. Neutral Ireland's impact on the outcome of the D-Day Landings happened here in June 1944. -The wilderness of Ballycroy National Park and its visitor centre is an essential stop on the way back to your hotel.
