My name is Wase. I grew up on a farm in the highlands of Lalibela with my nomadic family of 12. Life wasn't simple, but the vast fields bore witness to my curiosity. As a kid, I learned to obey the rules of Mother Nature, the traditions of my community, the importance of education and hard work. I spent my time as a shepherd and doing the hard work tilling, planting, fertilizing and harvesting. When I became older, I went to school in Lalibela high school and later to Addis Ababa where I got my Diploma with Three different field of studies — tourism, human resource management and French language. I also attended more training at Lalibela Vocational College in order to stay updated with current happenings and information of the world. As a member of the global family, I believe it is important to protect our world. I have kept that in mind as I worked as a trekking guide in the Nech Sar, Awash, Abune Yosef, Bale and Simien Mountains National Parks. For over a decade, I have led tours for people from all over the world around Lalibela and in tourist and non-tourist attractions across Ethiopia. I am now an official Trekking tour guide to Mt. Abune Yosef, Lalibela churches and it's surroundings tourist attraction. I try to operate it responsibly with commitment and honesty. I was born in Lalibela and it is the mountainous regions of Northern Ethiopia. I have spent my childhoods traveling the endless trails of these parts of the country. I have intimate knowledge of the churches of Lalibela, terrain, the local communities, and the cultures you will encounter in this corner of the country. I believe that I am an Ambassador of my country who loves and passionate with the job I do, I will be so very much showing you all about the hidden beauties of Ethiopia! -All my tours can be customized, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions - I am working as a private Tour guide since 2008. I studied a Cadet Course, Human Resources Management, French Language in one of Ethiopia's Military College, I was been a military officer (Lieutenant) and Served my country for 5 Years. I do not have any restrictions in regard to my guiding, I can offer a full range of experiences with a great commitment and passion!

Overview of your Lalibela tour

As you make the ascent climb towards Asheton monastery, the views becoming increasingly impressive. At the trailhead, there are views down towards central Lalibela and the rock-hewn churches, the trail then passes though small rural villages, and continues to follow the narrow, winding paths higher and higher until finally reaching Asheton Maryam. The climb is long, but incredibly rewarding. Lalibela and the surrounding area remain an important centre for Ethiopian Christianity to this day, and Asheton Maryam is no different.  The monastery is still in active use, with a priest living there full time to welcome worshippers and visitors. The monastery can be accessed by a roughly 5-hour hike straight from Lalibela, making it a popular goal for a day trip. As the hike can be challenging at times it is possible to do a part of the journey by mule, if preferred. Alternatively, visitors can drive to a nearby car park and complete the final 30-minute climb on foot.

Your Lalibela tour itinerary

After you arrived in Lalibela, tour the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This group of 11 monolithic and semi-monolithic structures were carved directly into the stone of the mountainside at least 800 years ago. This complex boasts the largest monolithic church in the world, a maze of passageways and tunnels, intricately carved reliefs, and fabulous examples of iconic paintings! The following day you'll take a morning hike with mules to Mount Asheton, with its 13th-century rock-hewn monastery and great views of the town. Alternatively, you'll drive to Yemrehanna Kristos, a beautiful church situated in a shallow cave that predates the churches of Lalibela. The drive to Yemrehanna will also allow you to view the rural countryside and villages of the Ethiopian highlands. Following either option, you will continue with a tour of Lalibela’s churches in the afternoon. After breakfast in your hotel, we will transfer you to Lalibela Airport and return to Addis Ababa..
