Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia, situated north of the beautiful town of Bahir Dar , is the source from where the famous Blue Nile starts its long journey to Khartoum, and on to the Mediterranean. The 37 mysterious islands that are scattered about the surface of the lake, give shelter to well hidden churches and monasteries of immense historical and cultural interest; decorated with beautiful paintings . Most of them are mysterious and solitude to provide peace and sanity for Ethiopian orthodox type of monastic life. They keep deeply impressing collections of religious and Emperors assets which reveal evidences of unique cultural achievements. The churches & monasteries with their icons, mural paintings, parchment manuscripts, scrolls, crosses and crowns including other bequests of Emperors are all representing cultural museums of early Ethiopian civilization. However, it should be noted that some of the religious houses are not open to women.
we spend full day exploring Lake Tana and its islands by boat. Wevisit the monastery of Ura Kidane Mihiret , Azwa Mariam, Betre Maream and Kebran gebriel . Ura Kidanemihiret is the best known of the monasteries and has an important collection of religious icons . Azwa Mariam is known for its paintings and we also have time to visit the small museum. Kebran Gebriel is the most sacred of the monasteries and unfortunately, only open to men and next we visit the head of the Nile searching for hippopotamus .
