Explore Thimphu your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Thimphu tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Thimphu for every interest, including:

Religious Sites tours: Join your guide to spin prayer wheels with locals at the Memorial Chorten, then ride up to the hilltop Buddha Dordenma for wide valley views as you hear the statue’s backstory. Step into Tashichho Dzong to learn how monastic life and civil administration share this fortress, or receive a blessing at Changangkha Lhakhang.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Meet Bhutan’s national animal at the Motithang Takin Preserve and walk forest trails around Kuensel Phodrang where you may spot pheasants or langurs. Prefer a hike? Follow your guide on the Wangditse or Lungchutse ridge for rhododendron woods and big Himalayan views.

Art and Culture tours: Try papermaking at the Jungshi Paper Factory and watch master weavers at the Royal Textile Academy before you sample ema datshi at the Centenary Farmers’ Market. Visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum to see students practise Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, then step into the Folk Heritage Museum to explore a typical 19th-century home.

Thimphu’s sights sit on hilly roads, so you can walk short stretches, but public transit is limited and distances add up. Ask your local guide about chauffeured tours or private transportation to link monasteries, markets, and trailheads with ease.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Thimphu inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Thimphu

Base yourself in Thimphu, then branch out to nearby valleys and towns on easy day trips that match what you like to see and do, with your tour shaped around hiking, heritage, or scenery.

Paro: Start early for the hike to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest monastery, or keep it mellow with Rinpung Dzong, the cantilever bridge, and the National Museum. Great for hikers, photographers, and anyone curious about Bhutanese art and daily life in a small town.

Punakha Valley: Cross Dochu La, then explore Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers, walk the long suspension bridge, and stop at Chimi Lhakhang. Warmer weather, riverside views, and terraced fields make this a good match for architecture fans and relaxed landscape walks.

Dochu La Pass and Royal Botanical Park, Lamperi: Short drive from Thimphu for mountain views and the 108 chortens, then forest trails at the botanical park with spring rhododendrons and birdlife. Works well if you want vistas without a long hike.

Tango and Cheri Monasteries: Gentle to moderate hikes through pine forest to two important monastic sites north of Thimphu. A quiet day for light exercise, meditation spaces, and learning about monastic life.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Thimphu most travellers miss.
