The World’s 10 Most Amazing Waterfalls

Apr 15 2021

Waterfalls are one of nature’s most captivating displays, and many of us have made trips specifically to witness their grandeur. But how do we create a definitive list of “the best”? Is it the height? Is it the landscape that surrounds the falls? Is it the volume of water or the power of the fall? Is it the way in which we can visit and interact with the environment? How close we can get?

The guides on ToursByLocals are experts when it comes to once in a lifetime experiences! So we checked in with some of them while creating this list of ten of the world’s must-see waterfalls - some tall, some wide, some remote - all unique.

The World’s 10 Most Amazing Waterfalls

Iguazu Falls

Iguazú Falls is considered one of the “New Natural Wonders of the World”, so this is a clear hint that we are facing a truly unique attraction. These falls are located on the border between Argentina and Brazil, and although we can visit them from both countries, 80% of the falls are on the Argentinean side. Their astonishing size and width of 2,700 meters are captivating!

We will not only be able to walk along the steel structure built above the water which will take us to the famous Devil's Throat, but we will also be able to embark on small boats that go completely under the falls. Are you ready to get wet?Niagara Falls

All the great falls seem to be used as a reference for international borders, and the Niagara Falls are no exception. You only have to cross the Rainbow Bridge that spans the Niagara River to choose from which side you want to see them (spoiler: the Canadian side is the clear winner!) If you want to enjoy this scenery from the water then you can take the Maid of the Mist boat ride, but if you are one of those ones who prefer to see them from below and behind, then you won't have a better option than “The Journey behind the Falls”.Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls are probably Africa´s most famous falls and they can be visited in one day from both Zambia and Zimbabwe. The falls span the border between the two countries, covering over 1.7 kilometers between Livingstone and Victoria Town. Travelers have a wide variety of amazing activities to choose from, which go from dinner cruises to more adventurous experiences like climbing up to the Devil´s Pool. Which one would you take?Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice can’t be left off our favorites list, but not simply because of the “Big Waterfall”. The nature strolls and sights in the surrounding parkland make this destination a true must-visit. This national park located in Central Croatia covers 295 square kms, and stands out for its 16 natural lakes that change colour according to the way the sun hits the water. Grey, green, blue and turquoise, you will find them all. Visitors walk along trails and boardwalks located in between the lakes and will have the opportunity to take the electric boat which links the upper lakes with the lower ones. The question is… which of these azure gems will be your favourite?Skogafoss

It might be hard for anyone to understand Iceland´s local language, but whenever we read “foss” that's a good sign: it means “waterfall”. Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss, Urridafoss and Skogafoss, all of them have something in common: tumbling water. In Iceland we can find the widest variety of falls, but almost none of the travelers who visit this country skip Skogafoss. Located on the southern coast of the country, it manages to hypnotize every foreigner with its marvelous and perfect rainbow. If you finished watching “Vikings” you would probably know what we mean!Angel Falls

Located in Canaima National Park, the highest waterfall in the world can’t be left off our Top 10 list. With its staggering 979 meters height, it is with no doubt a unique place on earth, but we must bear in mind that even though it is one of Venezuela's main attractions, just getting there can be quite an interesting journey. It can be visited by land, by boat during the rainy season, or by air. It's up to you to decide how you want to make the trip!Kaieteur Falls

If you are a waterfall lover and you have just visited Angel Falls, don’t miss Kaieteur Falls in the neighboring country of Guyana. This entire region is currently in dispute between these two countries and Venezuela claims it as part of the Guayana Esequiba. Despite being 265 meters high (almost five times higher than Niagara Falls), this waterfall is still an undiscovered treasure for many travelers who have never heard about it. Get there before the crowds do.Yosemite Falls

Yosemite’s springtime waterfalls are legendary. Millions of tourists come to this National Park in California every year to gaze at the many falls cascading into the valley: Sentinel, Ribbon, Horsetail… and the most famous, Yosemite Falls itself. Made up of Upper Yosemite Falls, the Middle Cascades and Lower Yosemite Falls, these three tumble from a total height of 737 meters. If you want to be there during the peak flow, then May or June is the best month.Rhine Falls

Located in Switzerland, the Rhine falls are one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe and they are easily accessible; you can reach them by car, bike or even public transportation. The medieval castle located just above the falls lends even more atmosphere to the natural wonder. You can view the falls from strategically placed viewing platforms, or for a real adventure, embark on a boat trip. If you’re lucky enough to be there on July 31st, you’ll witness the annual “Fire on the Rocks” fireworks display a tradition since 1857!Kuang Si Waterfall

Kuang Si Falls are one of the most popular day trips from Luang Prabang, the capital city of Laos. It’s not the height or the volume of water that’s the main attraction here; it’s the entire setting. The falls cascade gently into natural shallow pools with an unbelievable turquoise color, like something out of a fairytale. Make sure you have enough time to relax and take in the serene sight.
