So you're thinking about booking a safari? It's an adventure we believe every adventurous traveller should aspire to! There are lots of big questions that surface quickly when planning this sort of trip, and one of the first is: “when should I go?”
The answer varies depending on several factors, such as the location of the safari and the specific wildlife you're hoping to see - and also whether you’re the type of traveller who wants to travel at peak or off-season. Generally, the dry season in each region is considered prime viewing time, as the animals are easier to spot with the absence of lush green foliage, and are more likely to gather at watering holes, another great place to see them. Remember that this is also the season when demand for safaris is highest.
Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe): The dry winter months of May to October are generally considered the best time for safari in this region, with the very best game viewing typically from July to September. This makes for very cool mornings and evenings that warm up quickly, so be sure to bring good layers.
Namibia: The dry season, which runs from May to October, is the best time to visit Namibia for wildlife viewing, as the animals tend to congregate around water sources.
Uganda and Rwanda: The dry season, which runs from June to September and also December to February, is the best time for gorilla trekking in these countries.
Madagascar: The best time to visit Madagascar for wildlife viewing (lemur safari, anyone?) is during the dry season, which runs from April to November.
It's important to keep in mind that weather patterns can vary from year to year, and there may be pros and cons to visiting during different seasons. For instance, visiting during the rainy season may mean fewer tourists, cheaper prices, more baby animals (yes, please!) and the ability to book with less notice. It also doesn’t necessarily mean lots of rain. Many travellers have fantastic weather during safaris well outside of peak season. But it can also mean less reliable game viewing and potentially more difficult road conditions. You’ll need to weigh the pros and cons and pick the time that works best for you. (Spoiler alert: you’re going to have an epic adventure, no matter when you go!)
