We love to hear from the unique guides behind the amazing tours on ToursByLocals! Today we're featuring Diana, who has been working as a tour guide in Oslo for 16 years. She's here to share with us a bit about why she became a guide, and what she suggests you do during a visit to the Norwegian capital.
What to see, do and eat in Oslo: tips from a local guide
Hi, I am Diana, an authorized Oslo guide and a certified guide in the new National Museum. I’ve been running Oslo walking tours since 2006, sharing the history of Oslo and Norway. I decided to become a tour guide because I have a passion to show Norway and Oslo to friends and relatives. I specialized in Oslo tours for those that want to discover the
real Oslo and places off the beaten track. I like to interact with people from different backgrounds and from other parts of the world.
What I love about Oslo is that this is a city in constant change that offers an abundance of world-class architecture, new museums, and good restaurants but remains close to mountains, lakes, islands, and nature.
Top Three Things You Need to See in Oslo
The top three things travellers should not miss when visiting Oslo are the Akerselva river, an urban floating sauna, and walking along the harbour.
The Akerselva river flows through the whole city and into the Oslo fjord. Walking along the river you will find picturesque bridges, waterfalls, street art and some of my favourite cafes and bars.
The Urban floating sauna culture is one of the most popular activities among locals. Oslo harbour has plenty of super cool rustic and modern saunas. I use these saunas a lot and I like to go bathing even in winter time! Most saunas offer a drop-in session or you can also book a private sauna.
I like to stroll along the harbour and visit the main landmarks, such as Deichman Bjørvika library. Deichman is a unique library that offers something for everyone, such as restaurants, cafes, cinemas, 3D printing and even podcast studios. I also like to walk the Akerbrygge harbor promenade and visit the new National Museum.
Where to Go to Get a Great Photo
One of the best places for a great photo is Ekeberg sculpture park which offers panoramic views of the city, the Oslo fjord and the islands. This is one of my favorite parks because it not only offers great views of the city but also combines history, beautiful nature, and sculptures.

The Must-Try Local Food in Oslo
My favourite local food in town is the Norwegian waffle with brown cheese. These waffles are soft and sweet and have a heart-shaped design. I topped these waffles with delicious brown cheese and even sour cream and jam. One of the best places to try this food is at Haralds Vaffel, located in the hipster area of Grunnerløkka. You can also get these traditional waffles in cozy cafes, mountain lodges and restaurants.

Where to Go in Oslo to Celebrate a Special Occasion
One of my favourite places to go to celebrate a special occasion like a birthday is in a café or restaurant with the views of the fjord and the islands. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars you can find along the Oslo harbour.
