Discover Lidingö - Stockholm's charming hidden gem

Jun 19 2025

Today we welcome local guide Jessica in Stockholm as she shares her favourite off the beaten track destinations to explore with visitors - specifically the lovely island of Lidingö, a short trip from the city centre, but with an entirely different feel.

I live on the island of Lidingö in Stockholm and I have worked more than 10 years with ToursByLocals, using TBL myself on my travels. I would like to share my island with you. When I travel I love to see how the locals live and their daily life as well as part of their heritage and history - and this is what I wish to share with my travellers.

Take a Scenic Boat Trip to Lidingö

Start by escaping the bustle of central Stockholm with a boat ride across the waters of the archipelago to the island of Lidingö. The journey itself is part of the experience—gliding past colorful wooden houses, wooded islets, and the sleek modern skyline of Stockholm offers a uniquely Swedish blend of city and nature - tranquil and picturesque.

Explore Lidingö’s Industrial Legacy

Upon arriving on Lidingö, you’ll discover its surprising role in Sweden’s industrial rise. Once home to engineering firms and shipbuilding operations, the island reflects a pivotal chapter in the country’s development during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Remnants of old factories and repurposed industrial buildings dot the island, revealing stories of innovation and expansion.

Visit the Lidingö Viking Rune Stone and Burial Grounds

Step back over a thousand years with a visit to one of the island’s Viking rune stones, a fascinating relic carved with runic inscriptions. Nearby burial mounds hint at the island’s even older Iron Age history, offering a tangible connection to Sweden’s ancient past. It’s a quiet yet powerful reminder of the layers of civilization that have shaped the region.

Wander Through the Countryside at Elfviks Gård

At the far eastern tip of Lidingö lies Elfviks Gård, a historic farmstead surrounded by open fields, walking trails, and sea views. This peaceful area showcases the traditional Swedish countryside just minutes from the city, with opportunities to meet farm animals, stroll through forests, or enjoy coffee in a rustic café. It’s a favorite escape for locals seeking fresh air and pastoral charm.

Discover Millesgården: Art, Architecture, and Atmosphere

In the southwest of the island, you’ll find Millesgården, one of Stockholm’s hidden cultural gems—a clifftop sculpture park and former home of renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles. Visitors can explore grand fountains, mythological statues, and sweeping views of the sea and skyline, all set among Mediterranean-inspired gardens. The museum also includes Milles’ residence and studio, giving a personal glimpse into the life of one of Sweden’s most influential artists.
