Dear Traveller, I would like to welcome you to fascinating Tuscia, the heartland of the mysterious Etruscans. This area is just inland from the Civitavecchia/Rome port and its main city is the medieval town of Viterbo, once home to the popes. I moved here with my Finnish wife, Susanna, more than 20 years ago and we were happily taken by surprise by the sheer beauty and cultural richness of our new home place. But we were equally astonished to find very few tourists here. This is still nowadays very much the case, because most tourists choose nearby Rome or Florence. But I can assure you that those who did come here have not regretted it. I am by profession a international legal consultant working exclusively for a Rome-based United Nations Agency. Fortunately my work leaves me enough time for my passions: exploring together with visitors the wonders of the place we live in and our very lively music association. So please, let me tell you something about the Tuscia area: it is a lush-green hilly area just north of Rome and bordering the Tirrenean sea to the west, Tuscany in the north and Umbria to the east. As most places it is full of vibrant history, especially etruscan, medieval and renaissance history. The climate and food here are exceptional. I am specializing in full or half day tours for small groups, in which lunch at a very interesting private location, a cooking class or even an opera show can be included. I grew up in the Netherlands, where I graduated from law school. Since 12 years I am a licensed guide for the province of Viterbo. I am also a lawyer and are been employed as a consultant to a Rome-based U.N. organization. None

Overview of your Viterbo tour

We will start our day together at the chosen time and meeting point and travel through beautiful countryside to Viterbo, a magnificent medieval town but largely ignored by mass tourism. It lies on the road between two of the best-known tourist destinations in the world, Rome and Florence. This calm and rich town can claim to have been time ago at the centre of the world when the popes were residing there. After a visit to the renaissance townhall and a stop for a capuccino in the neoclassical Caffè Schenardi, we will visit Europe's best-preserved medieval quarters and the imposing papal residence. After lunch break we travel tothe beautiful hilltop town Tuscania and visit its two ancient churches. The mysterious people, the Etruscans, the "forefathers" of the Romans will claim our full attentionwhen we visit Tarquinia. This town is home to the world-famous UNESCO heritage site of the unique painted tombs and to one of the principal Etruscan archaeological museums in Italy.

This was an absolutely amazing tour with Rudolph! Our group of 4 had all been to Rome ( the typical destination when docked in Civitavecchia) multiple times and were looking for something different. Before this tour, none of us knew much at all about the Etruscans (I certainly don't remember any mention of them in any of my World History classes!). But by the end of our tour, thanks to Rudolph, we had a good knowledge of and a great appreciation for this impressive culture! Their painted tombs in Tarquinia were as fascinating as many of those we saw in Egypt! And the National Archeological Musuem there was beautifully laid out & most informative (make sure to inquire as to why the stairs to the second level are so unusual!). But the best part of the day came when Rudolph took us to a family-run restaurant he frequents, where he was enthusiastically received by Grandma! These kind of experiences are what keeps us booking Tours By Locals!

Rudolph was gracious, friendly and so knowledgeable! We went off the beaten path to towns with etruscan origins as well as areas with early "dice" style tombs . The trip was really eye-opening and thoughtfully put together! And excellent driver and so much fun to talk with. A memorable and fabulous day! Thank you Rudolf!

Rudolph is one of the most engaging, intelligent, and down to earth guides we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Immediately upon meeting us, he asked a few questions to get a sense of what was important to us and then customized the day. He kept us away from overly crowded tourist destinations and brought us to history-rich and awe-inspiring sights, ensuring we didn’t miss the Etruscan Museum, which is a must see! Rudolph took us to a lovely lakeside restaurant at Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe - beautiful! Thank you, Rudolph, for an amazing day!

After an exhausting 3 week trip all around Italy which ended in a cruise, we had the best ending by booking this private transfer to the airport. Everything was at our (very slow) pace but still delightful and we got to the airport for our later afternoon flight without rushing. Rudolph did a great job customizing our time to what we were most interested in.
