Dear Traveller, I would like to welcome you to fascinating Tuscia, the heartland of the mysterious Etruscans. This area is just inland from the Civitavecchia/Rome port and its main city is the medieval town of Viterbo, once home to the popes. I moved here with my Finnish wife, Susanna, more than 20 years ago and we were happily taken by surprise by the sheer beauty and cultural richness of our new home place. But we were equally astonished to find very few tourists here. This is still nowadays very much the case, because most tourists choose nearby Rome or Florence. But I can assure you that those who did come here have not regretted it. I am by profession a international legal consultant working exclusively for a Rome-based United Nations Agency. Fortunately my work leaves me enough time for my passions: exploring together with visitors the wonders of the place we live in and our very lively music association. So please, let me tell you something about the Tuscia area: it is a lush-green hilly area just north of Rome and bordering the Tirrenean sea to the west, Tuscany in the north and Umbria to the east. As most places it is full of vibrant history, especially etruscan, medieval and renaissance history. The climate and food here are exceptional. I am specializing in full or half day tours for small groups, in which lunch at a very interesting private location, a cooking class or even an opera show can be included. I grew up in the Netherlands, where I graduated from law school. Since 12 years I am a licensed guide for the province of Viterbo. From Civitavecchia port, we will start our relaxed day tour. The mysterious people, the Etruscans, the "forefathers" of the Romans will claim our full attention when we visit Cerveteri's Necropolis. This town is home to the world-famous UNESCO heritage site of the unique Etruscan tombs in Italy. We will drive through the lovely countryside to the volcanic lake of Bracciano and visit there the imposing Orsini Odescalchi Castle, where throughout centuries celebrities have got married (one of the last Tom Cruise:) This castle also holds one of the biggest collections of ancient weapons and armors. A nice lunch at the lake or in one of the cute local restaurants in the historic center will make this tour most enjoyable.
What a wonderful day! Picked up at the port and taken way off the beaten path to see villages and sites that were breathtaking in their charm and history. Rudolph gave excellent commentary throughout the day, and was also helpful with assisting my wife in finding medication along the way. He also suggested the perfect location for a delicious lunch with a beautiful lakeside view. A day full of wonders and did not see any other tourists at all. Outstanding!!!
Rudd picked us up from the ship and began to drive to the Umbria region and the Etruscans ruins. His knowledge of the fascinating civilization that predated the Romans brought it to life and we visited their impressive tomb architecture in the rolling countryside. The lovely town of Tarquinia and the Parco Torre di Lavello held all of the beautiful architecture of Italy that makes you want to move there. Rudd has the knack of finding little gems of towns tucked away from the noisy tourist spots. The Palazzo Farnese was one such castle with amazing art and history. We ended our tour with a lakeside lunch at Ronciglione. Wonderful day!
Rudolph is a fantastic guide and adapted the tour for myself and my Mother, who has mobility issues which meant we had a perfect day. He is such a gentleman, extremely personable and easy to be with and he has an in-depth knowledge and great enthusiasm for the local area and the Etruscans. The stops we made during the day were exactly what we needed and the insights he shared made us want to come back to this beautiful, calm area again. I highly rate Rudolph as a guide.
This was an excellent tour and I can recommend it to anybody who is interested in learning about the Etruscan culture and having a fantastic day with a fabulous Tour Guide. We had four family members that were treated with kindness and great hospitality by Rudolph, he is knowledgeable, intelligent, and terribly funny. Having been to Rome, many times we decided to divert and study the Etruscan civilisation, we were not disappointed and had a fantastic day.
