Tivoli villa d'Este and Villa Gregoriana, two stunning views, two different concepts. Villa d'Este, the XVI Century villa, the "buen retiro" of Ippolito d'Este, a spoiled cardinal who never managed to become Pope. (villa closed on Mondays mornings) The fountains and their hydraulic based mechanism still playing ancient tunes, the symbolism and the coming back to the thrills of ancient mythology . . . Villa Gregoriana, the hiking tour in the path of la valle dell'inferno. Romanticism, Nature and Grand tour for this magnificent site which had seen people like Herder, Lord Byron, Goethe and Royals. In the XVIII Century the villa underwent one of the most complex and challenging Hydraulic engineering work creating a beautiful waterfall still operating today.
from Rome, one hour trip by train. then short walk to Villa Gregoriana, (1-1/2 hours: lots of stairs going down and up). a short break to eat something and then Villa d'Este (2 hours) the tour is about 7 hours in total. In case of heavy rains the tour will not take place. Please note: this tour is not feasible for those who cannot walk well, especially in Villa Gregoriana some of the high steps may become slippery. Wearing hiking shoes is highly suggested.
