Ciao! I am Raffaele, a Neapolitan Archaeologist with 14 years of field experience on my neck and I am an Official Tour Guide of the Campania Region. I am an Authorized Tour Guide since 2015 and I am also a specialized Archaeologist; I did many archaeological surveys and excavations throughout Italy in particular Naples, Pompeii, Pollena Trocchia, Cimitile, Sorrento, Rome, Molise and Pisa. My Studies CV: I got a BA in Archaeology and History of Art with a dissertation on "burials ad Sanctos"; after that, I took a MA in Archaeology and History of Art with a dissertation on "the imperial and late roman amphoras from the Catacomb of San Gennaro in Naples", both degrees are from University of Naples Federico II. I obtained the Post- Graduate Diploma in Archaeology of Scuola di Specializzazione at University of Campania (Naples). Currently I am running a project for the restoration of an ancient Pompeii's building and its opening to the public. Through these studies I found commercial relationship within Naples bay and the other cities along the Mediterrean Sea during the Roman Empire (II BC -V AD). Guide / Archaeological work highlights: - In December 2021 the Nobel Prize Prof. Mario Capecchi was on a tour with me at the Archaeological Museum of Naples. - In March 2021 I discovered during an archaeological excavation a roman villa built outside the city walls of the ancient Pompeii (photo about it on my profile pic collection) - The municipality of City of Pompeii has awarded me the Prize for great and honorable guide and I am proud of it! (Oct 2019) - In September 2019 the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2011 Dr. B. Beutler was with me for a tour of Pompeii. (see pics on the slideshow) - I am also the owner of a TO "Grand Tour Experience", a team of guides all specialized in archaeology, history art and local culture! I travelled a lot, living for two years in London where I worked as conservator-restorer for the HMS Belfast better known as Imperial War Museum. Both travels and the experience of living abroad have made me understand how lucky I am to live in Naples! It's a city with a unique charm, where you can breathe history and art in every street corner, a place where people's energies are so strong and powerful that you can feel at home everywhere and in every moment of the day. A city, maybe, one of the most important in Europe and Italy, an unformed diamond waiting to be crafted. My strongest passions are archaeology and art. I love my land and I could not choose better job than this, where I can show the beauties, the story, the archaeology, the art, I can tell the tales and legends, I can bring you through the secret and veiled wonders of this place. Perhaps there's art in my DNA, or maybe I was born in the art. When I was a child, I was fascinated staring at my father when he was painting, watching colors mixing between themselves on a canvas, tasting theirs smell. On the side of my studies about classical archaeology and history of art, I love so deep the late Manierism and the Baroque in art. I am taking also a rediscovering of typical products of my land, as ' Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio ', one of the many exellences of Campania. For this reason I am the President of the association ' Le Ali della Terra ', that has to restore the unworked lands with clean coltures as the Piennolo's tomatoes. And for sure, as a good Italian I LOVE wine. I love my job as a tour guide so much to get excited all the time! Meeting new people is a power skill of this job. If you are not looking for a common tour guide, but you're looking for an archaeologist and art historian then you are in the right profile! - Specialized active Archaeologist - Licensed Tourist Guide - PhD/School of Specialization in Archeology at University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli - Dissertation about Pompeii (Bath House) - Master Degree in Archeology and Cultural Heritage at University Federico II of Naples - Dissertation about roman pottery - Bachelor degree in Archeology and History of Art at University Federico II of Naples - Dissertation about late roman burials I am not a driver but I can accompany you in a vehicle or I can arrange for a separate car and private driver.

Imagine this: a scenic road trip from Naples, passing the beautiful Italian coastline, all the way to the heavenly town of Amalfi. A super blue sea is in the distance as well as the impressive Mt. Vesuvius. Mountains all around and a beautiful natural scenery surrounds you while your local host drives you to the Amalfi coast. On the way, a super stop: the visit of Pompeii Archaeological Park with a professional archaeologist as authorized guide. . . all with a private driver: it's all true, just with this tour. Me and my driver will pick you up at your hotel or at the port/station (a perfect day trip tour from Rome too) and we'll reach Pompeii for a 2 hours guided tour: I've spent many years here, working as an Archaeologist and as Tourist Guide: I took part to the most recent discoveries. At the end of the tour we'll drive back and drop you off at the place you desire.
Raffaele led us through an amazing tour of Pompeii. His knowledge and expertise are 100%. A beautiful lunch in Ravello overlooking the Amalfi coast was incredible.
Pasquale is a superb driver and Raffaele an equally superb guide. This tour to Amalfi was a bit different than the rest we booked with Raffaele. Amalfi is great, but the weather wasn't wonderful that day and it's very touristy. If I had it to do over, I'd skip Amalfi and just spend the whole afternoon in Ravello where we had lunch. It had a wonderful feel and the weather there was PERFECT!
Our tour of Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast was outstanding. Raffaele was a great tour guide; his knowledge as a working archaeologist was most beneficial in our understanding of Pompeii. We visited a beautiful restaurant for lunch in Ravello and followed up with a walk through Amalfi. I highly recommend Raffaele and our driver, Alfredo.
Our tour of Pompeii with Raffaele was one of the best tours we booked with Tours By Locals! Raffaele is beyond knowledgeable about Pompeii and it's history. My son and I were amazed and awed to experience Pompeii through his eyes and stories. I cannot imagine another tour guide that would impart even half the knowledge Raffaele did. Do not hesitate to book this tour with him. I would definitely use him again if I ever got back to Italy.
We had a great visit with Raffaele! Some of our group had been to Pompeii before but never learned as much as we did with Raffaele. As he actually is an archeologist on the site he was able to show us so many things that your average visitor will never see. He knew how to avoid the crowds and make the visit unique and special. Following that we enjoyed the visit to the coast and he picked the best place to eat with a view. It was a perfect day and we cannot thank him enough!!!
we started out with some miss communication which in my opinion was no ones fault. Raffaele went way out of his way to make sure that our tour was completed and that we saw the ares that we most wanted to see. IF you want an excellent and informative tour use Raffaele. He is a expert on Pompeii and with his knowledge in archaeology you will learn and see what I feel only Raffaele can show and explain.
- Pick up where you require - Pompeii guided tour (around 2 hours) with all the main things to learn about the ancient roman city. It's included a visit to the most recent museum with Plaster casts (bodies). - Drive part of the Amalfi Coast and Photo stops on the way on panoramic scenary (area around Ravello - Amalfi) - Amalfi stop for a visit: here we can discover the pearl of the sea and the oldest maritime republic with its stunning cathedral, the Duomo of Amalfi, its baroque crypt. (ticket 4 euro per adult we can get on the spot with my guidance) - Shot of Limoncello of Amalfi or a Gelato? Why not. - Some free time (if schedule allows depending on traffic) - Drive back to your place
