Hi, my name is Donncha and I would be delighted to be your private driver/guide on your trip to Ireland. I am a qualified guide, approved by Failte Ireland, our national tourism agency. Your transport will be a Mercedes V-Class with leather seats and air-conditioning. I am passionate about my country, its history and its people and am proud to have been able to demonstrate its beauty and culture to so many people in the past. Always flexible, I am able to take you 'off the beaten track' to show some of the hidden gems of Ireland or any areas and places that might be of special interest to you. Overview of your Laois tour

Join me as I guide you around my home county and a place close to my heart. County Laois (pronounced Lee-sh !!) in the Irish midlands is home to historical houses and gardens, scenic mountain drives and pretty country villages. One of Ireland's first 'plantation' counties, you will visit places with historic and cultural significance to modern-day Ireland - from the 12th Century ruins at The Rock of Dunamase to the Famine Museum at Donaghmore. I will bring you to the area where I reside, and you will visit the heritage towns of Durrow & Abbeyleix or get a panoramic view of the county from the top of The Slieve Bloom Mountains. It would be my pleasure to show you my home county, take you 'off the beaten track' and discover some of the hidden gems of our beautiful country.

My tour of County Laois exceeded my expectations. My guide, Don, was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and always on time. His car was spotless and he was a very good driver. I was a bit apprehensive about doing a private tour as I am single female traveller but I always felt totally safe. My main reason for wanting to visit County Laois was because that is where my roots are. Before the tour I had emailed him with details of my family tree. He found the church where my ancestors were wed and their graves.

Your Laois tour itinerary

Pickup at 9am. The Rock of Dunamase is the first stop after pick-up - these fascinating ruins offer wonderful views across the rich fertile farmland of The Irish Midlands. A little further south is Heywood Gardens, Ballinakill - an easy walk through 50-acre gardens designed by Lutyens & finished in 1912 featuring a sunken walled garden with a pond. Durrow Village & Abbeyleix Heritage Town offer a glimpse into Ireland's past and its history of landlord and tenant. Lunch at a local pub/cafe. At Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum you will learn about one of the worst periods of Ireland's history through the eyes of those impoverished people who were living in 'The Workhouse' during the late 1800s (seasonal opening) Return to original pickup point 5pm - this is an 8-hour day trip.
