Welcome in the most southern part of The Netherlands, very near to the Belgium and German border. I am born and raised in Maastricht, as a son of a brewer. So, a real local who knows how pleasant live is in the historical and vibrant city of Maastricht. Graduated at the Tilburg and Rotterdam University, but now retired and happy to show people the city, that I appreciate. Of course I know all the hidden gems and I can also give you an advice about restaurants and pubs. It is a privilege to live in this beautiful international region, not only for the landscape of the Limburg hills but also for the German town Aachen ( Charlemagne ) and Belgium town Liege ( Prince-Bishop ). Discover a city on the banks of the river Meuse with a remarkable history, starting with the Prince Bishop in his palace next to the impressive huge church, dedicated to St. Lambertus. Discover also the center of the industrial revolution on the continent with coal mines and blast furnaces, inspired by John Cockerill, the brave city of WW1, the hometown of the famous writer Georges Simenon and the revitalization with the Calatrava railway station, the new tramtrack and the reconstruction of the old city center.
The tour was a lot of fun. René did a great job and shared a lot of interesting information about the city of Liège. For some, the tour felt a bit long-winded, but that was partly because Liège is, of course, a relatively small city. At the end, the Montagne de Bueren steps were only briefly visited, and we weren’t able to go up them, which some found a bit disappointing. All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and once again, many thanks to René!
